Brett Favre Retiring From The NFL

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer is reporting, and Buzz Cook, Favre's agent has confirmed, that Brett Favre has told Packer's Head Coach Mike McCarthy he is retiring. Favre is apparently upset that the Pack was unable to get Randy Moss, and this decision was, in no doubt, affected by Green Bay's lack-luster attempt to obtain Moss, this year or last off-season.

This is typical Brett Favre. Selfish. Yea, he'll go down with all those records, but I'll remember Favre's last pass, an interception, and his "I am taking my ball and going home" attitude he is expressing in quitting now.

At least Packers fans can take heart that Favre can not hold the franchise hostage.

The best comes from JSOnline --

Quarterback Brett Favre told Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy Monday night that he was going to retire.

But his agent, James (Bus) Cook, told the Journal Sentinel this morning that he believes Favre wants to play another year and didn't get the sense that the Packers wanted him back all that badly.

"It's my opinion," Cook said of the Packers' lack of interest. "I know he wants to play one more year. I do not know much conversation there was (between Favre and the Packers) and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it."

Cook said that Favre feels physically and mentally capable of playing at least one more year.

"I think he wanted to play," Cook said. " I think he's still got it. He knows he's still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got."

Cook was asked whether he thought Favre could be talked into returning: "I don't know," he said.

McCarthy said recently that he and general manager Ted Thompson sat down during the bye week of the playoffs and evaluated tape of Favre to determine whether he could still play. McCarthy said that they came to the conclusion that he was still able to play the game at a high level.

During the off-season, there were reports that Thompson had not done much to encourage Favre to return and that Favre's feeling was that the Packers weren't fired up about bringing him back. After reports surfaced of Favre's uneasiness about Thompson's lack of communication, Thompson told reporters at the combine that he called Favre to talk about the future.

This isn't going to stop

I may be in the minority here...
But I actually like Favre. It started when they played the Broncos in SB 32. In an interview before the game, he said if he had to lose a Super Bowl to anyone, it'd be John Elway. He was always a fan of Elway and tried to pattern his game after him. I thought, "well, anyone who's an Elway fan can't be all that bad." Add to it that the Vikings were always my distant 2nd team until I actually moved here. All those years of Denny Green, Cris Carter and Randy Moss soured me on them. So, it was always fun to see Favre work em over.

Anyway, although I hated the media fawning crap this year and was not happy he broke Elway's win mark, I still like the old man. Maybe part of it is just that, he's the old man. I think he's less than a year younger than me so I'm just living vicariously through him....

Or so I'm told.

I am with you
And I can't really criticize him either for waiting to see what the Packers were going to do before making his decision.  If he was completely on the fence about coming back, it seems reasonable that the fact that GB never did anything to push him forward into next season made him slide back off into retirement.  At least this year, he made the decision early enough that the team can plan around it.

They should be set
Aaron Rogers looked pretty good in relief at Dallas this year. The one thing they'll miss, just like the Broncos did, was that this year, every man on that team was playing for Favre, trying to get him to the SB again. Next year, there won't be that built in motivation. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it. But, again, the thing they have going for them is Rogers appears better than Son of a Bob was.
Or so I'm told.

Good bye Favre...
he may be selfish, but there is not denying he is one of the all-time greats.

The league will not be better off without him, because he added a certain excitement to the game only match by other all-time greats like Elway, Montana, or Young.

You all may not like him much, but there is no looking past his abilities as a QB.  I do have to say he isn't as bad as Phyllis Rivers. ;)

Does this mean that free agency
and the NFL world comes to a halt for 24 hours?  Or is it just gonna seem that way on ESPN?
