MHR Broncos History Lesson -- 1960's: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

NOTE -- This is perfect for the Main Page, I changed the date to today...TSG

I've struggled to find a topic I could consistently write about on a weekly basis.  The problem is, few things keep me interested for very long.  That said, one of those things is history.  What better thing is there to talk about than Broncos History?

Star-divide

Most of us die hard Bronco fans know all about how the Denver Broncos won the first ever AFL football game on September 9, 1960, but did you know that by the end of their third year the Broncos had a 4-2 record against the Raiders?   They even swept the Raiders in 1962 playing them two weeks in a row, outscoring the Raiders 67-13 in that two week span.

So even though the Broncos only won an average of 3.9 games a season in the 1960's, we owned the Raiders early in our history.  I do have to mention that the Broncos record against the Raiders from 1963-69 was an embarrassing 0-13-1.  So we should be grateful of our current situation with the newest laughing stock of the AFC West and we should also be grateful that the Broncos have not been the laughing stock of the AFC West since the early 70's!

By far, the Denver Bronco's best season in the 60's was in 1962.  In that seasons first nine games the Broncos were the team to beat.  Starting out a dominating 7-2 before faltering at the end of the season to finish 7-7(sort of reminds you of 2006 doesn't it?).  Head Coach Jack Faulkner, despite the poor finish, was named AFL Coach of Year.  Unfortunately for Coach Faulkner he would be fired after an 0-4 start the following season.

Most of us know about superstar Broncos, such as, Lionel Taylor and Floyd Little, but I want to take a minute to recognize some of the lesser known all-stars from the early 60's.

Let's start off with the best known of this
bunch, Lionel Taylor.  Why this guy isn't in the
Hall of Fame is beyond me, he was catching
100 passes before Steve Largent was potty trained.
Alas, he didn't do it while he was with the Bears so he
must not have been all that good. (1960-61)

Here I am going all crazy over McFadden, when we
already had a McFadin who was pretty darn good.
The all-pro defensive tackle was stout at the line and was
instrumental in the Broncos early success in the 60's. (1960-62)

Which Bronco holds the all-time record for most
interceptions in a single season?  Champ? nope.
Braxton?  nope.  Wright?  wrong again!
Try Austin "Goose" Gonsoulin.  Holder of the longest
standing record in the Bronco history books, the Goose
picked off opposing quarterbacks eleven times in 1960.
Goose retired in 1966 holding the AFL record for most
career interceptions at forty.  (1960 & 1962)

Any team that wants to succeed needs to have an
all-pro tackle or two.  Ours in the early 60's
was Eldon Danenhauer.  Eldon eventually served as
the player representative to the press in 1965. (1961-62)

The last guy to make the all-stars was Bob Zeman. You would be surprised how difficult it was to even find a picture of this guy. In any case, he is number 46 in the picture above.  He played two seasons with the Broncos having his best year in 1962 when he recorded 6 INTs for 133 yards and 1 TD. The following season he was part of the "Big Trade" with the New York Jets. (1962)

I blame the decade of insolvency with the Bronco organization on the so-called "Big Trade", which involved nine players and basically gutted the Broncos of talent for the next 10 years.

1962 was a year in which the Broncos started 7-2.  They had only won seven games in the two previous seasons, but after the "Big Trade" the Broncos won just four games in the next two seasons.  They then went on to win just 25 games over the next seven seasons.

The Denver Broncos became a great organization over time and was humbled by its early struggles. Now, under the leadership of Pat Bowlen, it has become one of the most consistent winners in the NFL over the past thirty years.

This concludes my lesson on early Broncos history.  I hope most of you enjoyed it.  My next history lesson will cover the Broncos rise to greatness. Specifically, the drafts of the early 70's that eventually led to a bErth in the Super Bowl.

Excellent stuff
As a NY native, I was not surrounded by Broncos lore growing up so I am looking forward to the series.

Dude
you need to replace "birth" in your last sentence with "berth", ASAP!!

I would do it but I think it is kind of funny and that you would like to know.

Other than that, great idea!  Broncos history has a ton of stuff that can keep readers eyes glued.  Nice job finding the photos too, btw.

I for one would like to know more about the ownership issues that came up when Bowlen took over the team.  Sounds juicy...

I wish my sig was as cool as mdierks!

lol
back in '77 that "birth" wouldn't be as painful as the hugely marketed Super Bowl of today.  :)

duh,  let me go give birth to the correct spelling. :)

Going a bit in order at first...
having been born in 1978, I am learning about this history too.  I mean I know about the BIG events in Bronco history, but it's sort of cool to dig deeper and find out more.

I will definitely research and write about the beginning of the Bowlen era.  I have a feeling the previous owner is a big reason why the Broncos were the laughing stock of the 60's and early 70's.  He just didn't flat out know what he was doing...sort of like Al Davis today. ;)

'78 was obviously
a good year for berths.  Er, births.
I wish my sig was as cool as mdierks!

I agree
but that could be because I was also born that year.

Great pics!
Thanks for the historical overviews.  I really like seeing the trading cards, especially as I like to collect football cards.

The early days
I know you guys like to think of me as old but I'm not THAT old. This is a little before my time, though admittedly I was alive and a fan, I was just a kid and not yet aware of the the more subtle aspects of the game.

Broncos history
Its sad that the Broncos went from 1962 until 1972 until they beat the raiders again. My very first game I got to see was the 1977 AFC title game against the raiders. I will never forget Morton hitting Haven Moses on a 64 yard bomb to give the Broncos a lead they would never give up. Plus ask Al about Rob Lytle's non-fumble!! =)

Lucky bastard! :)
My mom was just recently impregnated with me(uhg that made me shiver a little thinking about that).

Anyways, I too am a former San Diegan.  It must be way worse now that the Chargers are good again.  Back in the late 90's when I lived there, there were more Bronco fans than Charger fans at the Charger home games.

I went to the game in 98 when the Broncos played ugly and won 31-16 to improve to 11-0.  That was probably the only time in history that the Murph was a sea of orange.  Of course, most of them were probably newly minted Bronco fans because of the Super Bowl win the previous season.  Now I suppose they are all Giants fans.  ;)

Just thought I would answer for Raider Nation.....
as well as say hello to all you Donkeys as we all get ready for the draft.  It just great that you base the success of your early seasons on Bronco victory's over the Raiders.  However, since we are talking history, most Raider fans, including myself, consider the time before 1963, as the dark ages.

You see, Al Davis was hired away from the Chargers in 1963, at the age of 33. Known then and now for his slicked-back hair, Brooklyn-tinged speech, dark glasses and ferocious competitiveness, Davis became the head coach and general manager of the AFL's Oakland Raiders. He was the youngest person in the history of professional football to hold these positions.

Prior to Davis' arrival, the Raiders had compiled a 9-33 record in their first three years of existence. Davis led the team to a 10-4 record in 1963 and was unanimously named the American Football League Coach of the Year.

The rest, as they say, is history.  Al Davis revolutionized the game, as AFL commissioner he was one of the major figures that led the merger between the AFL and the NFL, and he's won three championships.

Yes Donkey Fans, in the end, all that matters are those shiny Lombardi Trophies, and we still have one more than you. You can have the success of the dark ages, and even 4 of the last 5 years, cause we can all see that the Raiders are on their way up, while the Donkeys ride slowly into the sunset.

That's the beauty of this game, it's cyclical, and nowhere in the NFL will that be more obvious in 2008, than in the rise of The Raider Nation.

How does that taste?  MMM MMM Good!

P.S. Hoosierteacher, I thought I was reported to some magic higher authority, and I would be kicked off all blogs for making a joke.  Hows that working out for you?

by OakFoSho on Mar 11, 2008 2:05 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Ironic
Ironic that someone talks about the dark ages when his team hasn't won a SB for decades, and has been in the celler of his division for ages.  I'm glad you've come around to learning about the concept of ancient history.  Folks here tried to explain the concept to you, but perhaps you are learning.

I'll take our SBs and multiple playoff appearences and victories over the faiders in the modern era over bragging about ancient history any day.

And making threats and using a comment board to insult people isn't a joke.  It's the sign of a feeble mind.  You were reported, and your account was noted.  I hope you'll consider being a better credit to your team by bringing thoughtful commentary to other people's sites.

In that context, I'd be willing to chat with you a bit more if you have something to say.  If you're not able to, I'll go back to ignoring your comments.  Saint came over a while ago to defend JM and showed class, and some of us went to his site to wish him well on his new daughter.  That's how it's done in the grown up world. We'd like to have you on board.

Just a few numbers
We all know numbers can be twisted in several ways. So take this for what it's worth. Going back the last 30 seasons (1978 - 2007), these are how the numbers look for the Broncos and the raiders.

raiders
Winning Seasons - 14
Losing Seasons - 11
Super Bowl Titles - 2
Conference Championships - 3
Conference Championship Games - 5
Playoff Record - 14-9

Broncos
Winning Seasons - 20
Losing Seasons - 5
Super Bowl Titles - 2
Conference Championships - 5
Conference Championship Games - 7
Playoff Record - 15-14

Keep in mind, a winning season is any season with a winning percentage over .500 . Also, any losing season is a sub .500 season. Therefore any .500 seasons are not counted.

Since 1960

raider winning pct: .556
raider total wins: 422

Broncos winning pct: .525
Bronco total wins: 394

The numbers above include the "dark ages" (the first 18 years of both franchises) and the Broncos early franchise struggles, and the raiders early successes.

Yes, with the numbers, the raiders before the 1978 season dominated the Broncos. Since that 1978 season, we've seen a reversal.

Take it for what it's worth.

by dpurvis on Mar 11, 2008 7:39 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually dpurvis.....
The Raiders have 3 SB titles, not 2.  If you get that major fact wrong, then the validity of all your numbers here is suspect.  How do you miss that one?   Denial is not a river in Egypt!  It is however, obviously your mental state.

Hows that taste?  MMM MMM Good!

I can admit a mistake........
I did not see the date at the top, but whats the point of looking at just post 78.  I mean I can understand one decade, but three.  If your gonna look at anything over a decade, then you have to mention the 1963-1978.

OakFoSho

by OakFoSho on Mar 11, 2008 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

1978 was chosen for a reason
Actually 1977 was the season the Broncos turned the corner in most experts opinion. They had a decent year the year before but failed to make the playoffs. Also in 1977 the Broncos beat two AFC power houses en route to a Super Bowl they would lose. However, I like round numbers and 30 years was a good round number.

But, I'll take your challenge of a Decade, using the same stat lines, with an added bonus of Winning Percentage, including playoffs.

raiders
Winning Seasons - 3
Losing Seasons - 5
Super Bowl Titles - 0
Conference Championships - 1
Conference Championship Games - 2
Playoff Record - 4-3
Winning pct: .431 (including playoffs)

Broncos
Winning Seasons - 6
Losing Seasons - 2
Super Bowl Titles - 1
Conference Championships - 1
Conference Championship Games - 2
Playoff Record - 4-4
Winning pct: .601 (including playoffs)

Also, going into last season, the Broncos had the best 10 year winning percentage of any NFL team(1997-2006). I believe of the top winning percentage teams in the four major sports, the Broncos were third, behind the San Antonio Spurs (1), Detroit Red Wings (2), and ahead of the NY Yankees (4). I'm pretty sure that this changed this past season. Just some food for thought.

Also, it takes a big man to admit when he was wrong, I appreciate that.

by dpurvis on Mar 12, 2008 6:01 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I infer that you mean 1998-2008......
And this has been a good decade for you all, and even better if you continue back one more season.  But the Raiders are on their way back up, and this season is going to be a revelation to all the Raider Haters around the nation.  Ahem!  ESPN!

OakFoSho

by OakFoSho on Mar 12, 2008 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Correct, 1998 - 2007
Yes, those numbers above were from 1998 through 2007. We haven't played the 2008 season yet, so we don't count it yet. Also, 1998 - 2008 would be 11 seasons. You can't just subract the years and come up with the right number. Like I said to begin with, numbers can be twisted many ways.

1998 - 1
1999 - 2
2000 - 3
2001 - 4
2002 - 5
2003 - 6
2004 - 7
2005 - 8
2006 - 9
2007 - 10

As for the raiders are on their way up.... only time will tell.

by dpurvis on Mar 13, 2008 7:51 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have given you plenty........
Of history lessons in the past buddy, and I would be happy to do so again.  Lets get this straight, the rivalry between the two franchises is a direct result of Al Davis.  Thus, the time Pre-Al Davis, the dark ages, don't matter when concidering the rivalry between our two franchises.

I made no threats, however I do mock you.  Openly!  Why? Because you are a hypocrite.  You are the one that resulted to personal attacks (I believe you called me a troll amongst many other things), once I had picked you apart in our debate, and you had no facts left to stand on.

My post was filled with careful commentary on the beginnings of the Raiders, it's just the Post Script that addresses you.  If you find it distasteful, good.  I'm not here to make Donkey fans feel comfortable.  If you can't take the heat, get out the kitchen!

Lastly, the Raiders have had some bad years since the 2003 SB, but we still beat you last season, and we have gotten better this season.  So what does that say about the current state of the Mile High Mules?

How does that taste?  MMM MMM Good!

Now your current Al Davis is Mr. Burns taking the sunlight away from the Raider Nation.

The cycle has been lopsided since Al Davis was middle aged.  The Broncos are riding into the sunset of continued greatness, while the Raiders continue to roll around in the slop with the rest of the dead beats of the National Football League!

You know...
It just makes me sit back and laugh. I read silver and black and the one thing that cracks me up is no matter who it is or how "Over rated" the player was last season they are "Great additions" once they become raiders. (See Javon Walker). Last year his knees were suspect and raider fans were glad we had him as our number one because he was "old and hobbly." Now hes a beast of a player! Another that continues to make me laugh are the names we have "mile high mules" "denver donkeys", et al. Is that seriously all they have time for? well I guess they dont have to worry abotu their team making the playoffs so they have to invent clever names for ours. we just have the faders, phylis and his merry men and the missouri indians or chefs. Classic

Actually....Mile High Mules....
I just made that up on the fly as I was typing, If it has been used in the past, I have no clue.

Also, speaking for Raider Nation, we all know Javon Walker is injury prone, but he is still an upgrade over Porter (now in JAX), so most are happy.  Also, most of the money on the contract is backlogged, so the risk is not as high as some would like to think (ESPN).  At the other end of the spectrum, if he stays healthy, then it will be a great pick up for the Raiders.  It often takes knees two seasons two fully heal, which means Walker could have a huge season.

OakFoSho

by OakFoSho on Mar 11, 2008 6:46 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Javon could have a good season...
but the knees sound similar to Terrell Davis.  Davis' knees quickly degenerated since the 1999 blowout and he was out of football by 2003.  I hope Javon does well physically, but not be successful against Denver.

A change of scenery could do him some good.  Living and playing in Denver a season after D-Will dies in his arms would take a toll mentally on anyone.

I believe in modern medical science.......
and you also have to keep in mind that TD was a RB, and that is much more demanding on the knee than WR.  Sure WR is still tough on the knee, but the constant beating and sporadic unconscious cuts that RBs make definitely require more from one's knees.
