REPORT: Broncos and Dewayne Robertson Have Deal In Place
Newsday's Tom Rock is "told" that the Broncos already have a new contract for DT Dewayne Robertson in place.
Rock guesses that the Broncos and Jets will work out a draft-day deal, most likely involving a second-day pick. The second day now involves rounds three through seven, but it's doubtful the Jets could get more than a fifth-rounder.

I like it!
I think DR would be a very solid upgrade to the Broncos front 4.

Jets Fan
Jets fan here. Robertson's injury concerns are completely overblown. They guy has missed only a handful of games during his career, and they were for an unrelated injury. His knee issue was known when he was drafted, yet he has been a 5 year starter who hardly ever leaves the field.
Interesting how each of the teams who are alleged to be interested - Broncos, Bengals, Panthers, Lions etc - seem to want to sign him anyway if he is cut. So it seems they all agree he IS healthy enough to play...hardly a surprise since he hasn't missed a game for 2 years, and has started well over 90% of Jets games (not 80% as Shanny claims) over the last 5 years.
Whoever gets Robertson - even if it costs them some mid-level picks - will be getting a steal. The guy is big, young (26) and talented. He stays in the field and he produces, especially in a 4-3 scheme which allows him to shoot the gaps. He's just been a square peg in a round hole as a NT in the Jets' 3-4 scheme, which is a waste of his undoubted talents.
I realize this guy is just a fan like me, but if he is right and Robertson can play that one technique position and stuff the run this could really be a big deal.

Ellis over Robertson
I also agree that something doesn't sound exactly kosher in the story. "...he was told". I wonder by whom.

No on Crowder
Crowder IS capable of playing at DT, so my opinion is just an opinion. But Crowder's natural fit is at DE, and he has done well there. I would only move Crowder if there was a disasterous drought at DT due to injuries.
The depth chart needs several rotational DEs who are more "bull rush" and run stop oriented than the speedy pass rushers. Guys like Eng, Eck, and Crowder wear down faster in the game, while Doom and Moss can play a bit longer. I think we already have excellence and depth, but a team only needs one or two pass rushers at DE, and the rest of the DEs should be the (less spectacular but equaly important) big dogs.
As far as taking Harvey goes, I lean against it but Guru did make a very compelling case. If we take Harvey I would hope to use him as bait for a draft day trade. In a worse case scenario we still have an excellent (extra) DE.
So "No" on moving Crowder, "toss-up" on taking Harvey.

I'm guessing 4th rounder
That being said, Denver could target DT Ahtyba Rubin with their high first rounder, if he falls that far. Could Denver be holding off on the deal to see when and if Rubin is selected before they pick?
My guess is if Rubin is available with their first pick in the fourth round, the deal with Robertson may be off. Early indications are that that won't be so, and Rubin will go late in the third.
A similar situation exists for DT Guion in the sixth, and DT Hayden in the sixth, though both of those prospects are much rawer. Also in the fifth are DT Dykes and DT Harrison, both mentioned with gusto by Tom Marino. 34 year Pro Scout, Tom Marino, mentioned in his interview with Guru that he thought Guion would be a top player against the run down the road, and could be a sleeper.
So I'm figuring a fourth rounder since Rubin alone would be the prospect that Denver might be targeting where there isn't a propspect with similar value at the same position close by as a consolation prize.
In terms of Robertson himself, I would love it if Denver accompanied a pick like Rubin with Robertson as a later pick, since except for McKinley, all we have on the line, (and expect to ahve at this point) are unproven guys with little or no NFL game experience.
Is he worth more than Rubin? I think so, but getting Rubin in the fourth and Robertson for a fifth or sixth would be the best of both worlds.

AHTYW@#RXZBA Rubin
I've never even heard of this Rubin guy before. There is no way this guy is a first rounder, you're on drugs.
I haven't even seen a mock draft with this guys name in it. What school did he go to? Think Trevor Laws bro. He is who we're going to target with the 42nd.

What makes him such a potential steal? Where did he go to school? What are his triangle numbers?
Thanks professor!

Follow the links in his diary. One of them breaks down the DTs in mid and later rounds. R8erh8er does a terrific job in that link talking about the different DTs and why they eserve a second look.
(We all can get a little over zealous from time to time. Just be glad that "big" Styg the commercial fisherman is living far, far away in the Alaskan wilderness where he kills bears with his bare hands and eats their salmon too!) LOL

Great take
More on this in my story this weekend. In short, the alleged deal with the NYJ makes a lot of sense. I think draft day will answer almost all of the weird situations (OL, DT, WR, SAF, Hamza, Myers, Lynch) we've been trying to figure out.
Oh, and did I mention RB?

Red Bryant
If we trade down and can pick up Rubin in the third and can get Robertson with a fifth or sixth and he restructures, Hell I'll buy FlabroncoFan a new pair of pants.
by firstfan on Apr 10, 2008 5:03 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
too high in the third
If Bryant had better pass rushing skills, he would be a high second round tackle. As it is he has NO pass rush moves. But he is a dominating run stuffer. Basically he struggles in space, for a variety of reasons.

Shanny tends to strike gold in the 4th round...
I'll take him if he is less than half what he would be making this year if he stayed with the Jets and if we give up no more than a 5th rounder for him.
I'm just not that big on a guy who never lived up to his #4 pick overall status.

I want D-Rob and Ellis
Grab a WR (or Kenny Phillips if he slips) in the 2nd, an OT and RB with our remaining 4th and 5th round picks, and a P and K with our last two picks.

Hehehe
Okay, we all know that our biggest needs are on the lines. We have young defensive ends who aven't gotten a fair chance. Bring in Robertson, OK. We're beastly at picking good linemen in the late rounds.
We need a wide receiver more than a rb. Because of the stop gap safeties, it's Hamza evaluating time with kwhatshisface and bailey. This is a developmental season.
With that, wouldn't it be great to have 2 6"5' WRs? Yea, you know what I'm saying...
