MHR University Extra Credit - How to View the Draft

The options will continue shortly. The first five Extra Credit Options we meant to address those areas that we played big in Free Agency and we need to address in the draft. What I wanted to do here is show the importance of this draft and how it can affect our future. This year more than ever we face a time where we will make or break our team for the next few years. We are looking at drafting from this point onward for depth rather than starting caliber immediately. Why do I say this? I will show you. We have a few franchise players on this team, players who will anchor their side of the ball for years if we play things right. Who am I talking about? Some would say I am referring to our overall best players. This is a bit true but mostly the guys I am thinking of are younger have their entire careers ahead of them and are looking for the Broncos to make them Champions here. If not they will have no regrets leaving. So which guys do we build around?

Star-divide

OFFENSE:
We have three guys in my opinion to build our team around here. Jay Cutler, Tony Scheffler and Brandon Marshall will anchor this team for years to come on this side of the ball. Having three guys that are now the "Poster Boys" for the Denver offense is a good thing. That is three positions off the bat that we will look at  for nothing more then depth. We can bring in backup guys who are FA's or draft later round guys in the hopes they work out.  I am sure you will think I am a wee bit off my rocker but I hope to break it down.
JAY CUTLER, #6 QB Vanderbilt Season 3
Jay is THE piece we need to build around on this side of the ball. He is and agile quarterback who can also sling the ball down the field. The best part about Cutler is he can do both at the same time without it hurting his rhythm. He is by far the best quarterback from his draft class and probably one of the top guys in the league who is up and coming. When you have a quarterback like Jay, you have no choice but to put him in a position to get a ring or six!
TONY SCHEFFLER #88 TE Western Michigan Season 3
The nice part about Tony is he comes with some great speed and great hands. He is learning to block from some of the best guys in Graham, Nalen, and Hamilton. Lepsis probably gave him a few pointers while he was there as well so he can only go up in his blocking ability. As a receiving Tight End he has some big shoes to fill in Bronco Country. Shannon Sharpe was an exceptional player, that being said Scheffler in his own right poses a big mismatch for defenders. His speed requires a corner or safety. His strength requires a Linebacker. There are very few Linebackers in the NFL with the speed to match up with him. He also has a vertical threat that is hard to match with most Linebackers or safeties.
BRANDON MARSHALL #15 WR University of Southern Florida Season 3
Marshall is just a force on offense. He may not have elite speed but he makes up for it by making defenders feel like they have been hit by a bullet train trying to tackle him. He has the height and jumping ability to beat out some of the top corners in the league (it also helps to practice against Champ). His mammoth claws can hang on to the ball well especially when corners try to strip the ball. His after the catch ability is really what makes defenses scared of him and they will often keep a safety behind the corner to save the big play. This could free up a teams running game for the short yards and some big middle runs.

DEFENSE
On defense there are some amazing players that we have bred here in Denver. The two that come to mind quickly are DJ Williams and Elvis Dumervil. You could throw a lot of names in here but these two are our younger players who we need to build around without really worrying about their position. Once again we can bring in some FA's and draft around these guys knowing they will man their position well. You could add Marcus Thomas or Tim Crowder or even Hamza Abdullah but they have to prove their metal as these two have done.
D.J. Williams #55 LB Miami Season 5
D.J. is just plain scary. One writer actually referred to him as a Greek god like hitting machine. He has played all three positions and has been solid all four years. What scares me most about Williams is that he HAS been game planned against and is still successful. After having three statistically amazing seasons and one decent season in which he was still a force he shows signs of only improving, especially now that he is in his natural spot on the weak a.k.a. kill the quarterback side. With our current FA signings, he will be a significant part of our pass rush and getting behind the line and hitting the ball tackler.
Elvis "DOOM" Dumervil #92 Louisville Season 3
DOOM as he has been nicknamed by Broncos fans, has been told his whole life he would never be a professional football player. He was told he was too small, couldn't tackle, and would over run too many plays. While he is far from polished, DOOM has set himself up nicely as one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. His wingspan and speed are spectacular for a guy his size and his football smarts have only improved year by year. Having some more scary pass rushers and some solid Defensive Tackles would solidify him as a Quarterback's nightmare in the NFL.

Those are my top five guys we need to build our team around. I am not saying they are the only guys on this team but they are the ones who will be there for years and the guys we can start building around solidly.  Thoughts and comments?

The only reason I didnt list champ
is that at this point in his career champ is more of a entire floor, not just the foundation! In all seriousness though Champ is almost 30 which means he is at the halfway point of his career. While he probably wont drop in talent or skill EVER he isn't something we should look to build around. Champ ensure that the immediate future does not have to worry about our #1 corner. We should however plan that champ is not going to pull a favre and stay till he dies.

Youth is what makes all the difference.
I voted for the list you made.

As much as I love Champ, you can't build around a 30 year old guy.

Orange County is hot. Really! Haven't you seen the weather report?

I reread
your description of "building around them."

I can agree with your assessment and of not including Champ, under the definition which essentially says, you build around the players that will make up the identity of the team, and if not yours, they will leave and be the identity of someone elses.

Obviously an important element here is that they have to be young enough to be able to go somewhere else and establish themselves again, so I can agree with leaving Champ off the list.

But, hypothetically speaking, when Champ's contract comes up in a few years, wouldn't it feel like part of the Bronco's identity was leaving, especially if he left because Denver wasn't doing enough to surround him with the talent to win a championship?

I suppose that last part could be viewed as challenging the entire underlying argument you are making, i.e. that certain players are "built around."  Thoughts?

I would hate to lose Champ
however, I think he stays at at a reduced rate if we build a team around these guys and he feels like the missing link in the Broncs armor. I see Champ staying and I think he is ready for these guys to be the ones we build around

Outstanding job as always Jon
Agreed on your core youth movement.

Champ is my favorite player, but he's not the future core for this team.  If we are set for a run in for the SB in the next four to five years he'll be a difference maker.  Beyond that, the five names you mentioned are the future of this team.

Thanks HT
you know what I noticed was that Doom cutler and Co are all three year guys which makes me think that 2006 was a great draft.
