Horse Tracks 4/5/08

Here's a weekend Final Four edition of Horse Tracks.  Enjoy!

Well we now get to see the Favre-less Packers in the preseason.  See here

Here's a overview of the AFC West.  See here

Mike Kils has an article about the chances the Texans and Broncos have in reaching the Super Bowl.  Right now the Texans are favored.  See here

Jeff Legwold give an overview of the RB available for Denver to draft.  See here

The writer seems to think that the offseason has been a nightmare.  He also seems to think that Broncos Country is smaller than it really is.  See here

TSN gives a draft preview and claims that Shanny is on the hot seat.  See here

Not much news from the other AFC West teams.

Bottom of the Barrel

Well, it took a few arrests, but the Bengals have finally rid themselves of a pest.  They cut Chris Henry.  See here

Just a heads up folks.  Horse Tracks could be MIA some this month.  I am moving to another place this month and will be starting some certification training to help boost my career.

Have a great weekend and GO KU...Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Awesome gem hidden in story!
The Klis article on HOU/DEN has a great sub-story that explains Meyers, Elam, and Hamza and our plans for '08.  Anyone that plans on reading the University article for next week can get a big jump by reading this Klis work.  It cements some things I've been thinking about.

Yea, HT.
I kind of mumbled my thoughts together about this in a Daiary. I was trying to organize myself, but it blew up in my face.

Anyways, next week should start some debate as those positions are the root of our problem.

I hope you get to read and comment on it.
The next University article will be about a lot of the confusion for fans about what is going to happen in '08.  It's my belief that the situation is more murky than in past years.

This is where you are so valuable.  What I like best about you is that a lot of your opinions run contrary to what is conventional.  And in a confusing moment like I think we are in right now, the more diverse opinions we have the better chance we have to figure out the team's plans.

Some of the statements don't look bad, they just don't seem to make a lot of sense on first glance.  I think a lot of views from the MHR membership will bring clarity.

I agree
I had to think about my own diary, but I tried to do my best with only about 10 minutes to put something up.

Anyways, I agree. It is very murky and I'm kind of putting my opinion out there. CJ would have been questionable last year(Calvin), but this year CJ (Chad) makes sense to me.

KU
I am not a Kansas fan, but I hope your team wins today. Good luck. I hate Carolina. Hopefully, the final is Kansas-Memphis because I can't stand UCLA, either.

Couple quotes from Shanny about Marshall
A horseplay incident with his brother resulted in Marshall's right arm going through a TV set, damaging tendons, muscles and an artery. He is expected to recover in time for the Broncos' training camp in late July.

"He's lucky he didn't die," Shanahan said.

and then on Cutler's reaction

"It's what leaders do," Shanahan said. "He called him out without throwing him under the bus."

by MattR on Apr 5, 2008 2:23 PM MDT reply actions

The first comment...
..is another shocker.  Did Marshall lose that much blood from an arm injury?

The second one is great.  Cutler did call Marshall out without throwing him under the bus.  The foolish media has portrayed Cutler as throwing the bus at Marshall, but anyone who read the full statement or watched the video knows that Cutler showed restraint.

I was talking to my aunt about this
It came up in the context of the second quote and how the national media is so eager to create confrontation and cherry picks how they quote people to portray the narrative they are pushing.  But I was telling her about Marshall's injury and when I mentioned the fact that he severed an artery in his arm, her immediate reaction was "My God.  He could have died."  I guess anytime you sever an artery you risk major blood loss if you don't get medical treatment.

And from my reading, it seems like Marshall did not immediately realize the extent of the injury either.  I think his initial comments were honest and that he thought it was "just a flesh wound" and that he would be catching balls in a couple weeks.  It took a day or two for him to realize just how serious the cut was and how long it would take him to heal.

by MattR on Apr 5, 2008 5:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Good point.
An arterial bleed is no joke.  I guess my perspective is that the man has so many things going for him in this situation.
  1. He and his brother may be rough housing kid type people, but they might have had the sense to apply direct pressure (Marshall is, after all, a college grad).
  2. Marshall is a wealthy individual, and has the means to seek immediate help from a hotel in a major vacation resort.
  3. It is reasonable to assume that a major health care facility and emergency transport are nearby.
  4. We live in a country where (sorry Michael Moore) emergency health care is guaranteed regardless of ability to pay, and emergency health care in the US is outstanding.
  5. Marshall is in better shape than the average American male, and can better endure a traumatic injury.
Again, Shanahan and your aunt are correct.  The injury is much more serious than any of us probably thought, and in itsself was potentialy deadly.  But for him to have died with the mitigating factors he has going for him, it would have been a freak, accidental death.  Just my opinion.

Yeah, you are right
There was no real threat of the injury actually leading to Marshall's death.  He literally would have had to act like the "flesh wound" knight from the Holy Grail.

"What are you going to do, bite me?"
