Jacksonville Jaguars 24 - Denver Broncos 17 - Post Game Quoteables

DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN

Opening statement

“So I think we had a chance to take control of the football game early after the first drive and the turnover and we didn’t take advantage of it.  Unfortunately we had three turnovers which gave them ten points and that got us behind the eight-ball.  In the second half, give credit to them, they made plays and had a couple long drives and they did what they needed to do to win the football game and we couldn’t respond.”

On injuries at the wide receiver position

“Hopefully we’ll have them back.  [WR Brandon] Stokely had a concussion and we’ll see how serious that is.  Hopefully [WR] Eddie [Royal] can come back next week.  He’s got a bone bruise, and hopefully that will clear up.”

“I thought [WR Glenn] Martinez made plays in there.  For the first time, [WR] Darrell Jackson was back.  We had those guys play a lot of plays in the second half.  We lost a couple guys and a couple guys stepped up and unfortunately we didn’t get it done.”

On the defensive performance

“I think we wore down a little bit.  We got a little tired.  At the end we were trying to strip the ball when they were pushing.  They made the big plays.  They had a big run for a touchdown and a pass.  We responded to one of those but couldn’t take advantage of our opportunities.”

On RB Michael Pittman

“I have a lot of confidence in Mike.  He does a great job.  He better be able to step up because we only have two guys left.”

On the interference call on the Broncos in the fourth quarter

“I didn’t think it was interference.  I was right there, right on the spot.  I’m not sure what it was like on the replay, but I didn’t think it was.  In fact, being right there, I’d better a dollar to doughnuts that it wasn’t [pass interference].  It doesn’t really matter.  We had a lot of opportunities to do things throughout the game.”

On Jacksonville QB David Garrard

“He makes plays.  The one quarterback draw at the end versus a blitz…I give credit to him for showing what type of athlete he is.  He got away from a few sacks and he’s a heck of an athlete.  [He is] very strong.”

On the defense

“We had a chance to control the football game but we turned [the ball] over three times, and it’s hard to win those kind of games.  But we did get two turnovers on defense and a couple of sacks, but we just couldn’t keep it going.  We had improvement on both sides of the football and special teams.  We just have to keep on working, we know what our record is, and get ready for New England.”

On going for it on fourth down in the second quarter

“It was not a bad choice on my part.  I would have went for it again.  I wish I could have chosen a different play.  You second guess yourself on that, but I take total credit for the mistake.  Sometimes you’re going to make it and sometimes your not.  I thought we could get the fourth-and-one.  I’d probably go for it most of the time, and probably make it some of the time.”

DENVER BRONCOS PLAYERS

QB JAY CUTLER

On missing WR Brandon Stokley during third downs

“We got [WR] Glenn [Martinez] in for us and he did a good job. Stokley and [WR] Eddie [Royal] were out, these things happen. It’s a long season.”

On if this is a game that got away

“We’re 4-2. There’s no need for everyone to panic or anything. We still have New England next week and a bye after that. So we can rest a little bit. We just have to go back to the film and look at it. Be critical, and move on.”

On the reason why points per game has dropped

“You look at turnovers, defense, it’s a culmination of things. When you turn the ball over three of four times a game, it’s hard to score points.”

On the injuries at WR

“No, we’re ok. We have this next game and we’ll heal up, hopefully. Hopefully [WR] Eddie [Royal] gets back next week.”

WR BRANDON MARSHALL

General Statements
“Usually when you win the turnover battle, you have a good chance of winning the game. And I feel that we didn’t do a good job of ball security and it cost us.”

On his first half fumble

“I guess I kind of still live in the past. Last year it worked for me running around, and this year it’s costing me. So I guess I have to go back to the basics and just get what I can up the field. I need to stop going for the extra yards. It’s costing me and the team.”

On his connection with QB Jay Cutler

“I wouldn’t say that we weren’t on the same page. We did a great job of moving the ball. Like I said, we killed ourselves with the turnovers today and we have to put the ball in the end zone.

“It’s just Jay knowing the situation on the third down. We were not in field goal range and he just threw a jump ball. The guy made a great play on the ball.”

“Nobody’s perfect. If you look at the stats, Jay went 77% today. He did a great job of managing the game.”

On taking himself out of the game

“I’m not a lion, I can’t run all day. There were times when I was a little winded, but it’s part of the game. You’ve got to take a breather and get right back in the game.”

On added pressure with the number of missing WR’s

“I wouldn’t say extra pressure. It definitely makes our job hard as an offense because they’re a big part of our offense. But guys have to step up and make plays. That’s not an excuse for us.”

On the third down pass

“I ran the slant route; we just didn’t get it done.”

On the decrease of points being scored

“You look at KC, we turned the ball over. Today we turned the ball over. So they’re definitely going to take away from the points we put on the board.”

On choosing when to go for extra yards, or not

“You’ve got to do what’s best for the team. Right now, that’s my third fumble. I’ve lost two this year. No one can correct it but me.”

LB JAMIE WINBORN

On the defense

“As a defense, we didn’t do what we wanted to do out there. We gave them a good fight, but we didn’t get the outcome we wanted.”

“They came out attacking and found some stuff that was working. We made some adjustments, but they proved to be the better football team today.”

“We knew they were going to run the ball and we were prepared for it. We just didn’t play as well as we needed to in order to win.”

DT KENNY PETERSON

On the defense

“The offense made some mistakes, but this is a team sport. As a defense, we have to get the ball back. They were able to capitalize on the mistakes we made.”

“They jumped out on us. We knew they were going to run the ball. We weren’t able to make the plays we needed to, to get our offense back on the field.”

General statement

“After a loss like this, you have to look forward to the next week. We have to build some momentum, look at film and get better.”

WR BRANDON STOKLEY

On his injury

“I got slammed to the ground and the back of my helmet hit the ground.”

“I still don’t feel good. When you have a brain injury like that, time is the only thing that can make it heal.”

TE DANIEL GRAHAM

General statement

“We can’t turn the ball over in this league if we want to win. We didn’t capitalize when we needed to. We had plenty of chances to score, but we didn’t do that today.”

On the offense

“We have to do a better job of holding onto the ball, keeping the defense off the field and putting points up.”

CB DRE’ BLY

On his fourth quarter penalty for illegal contact

“There were other plays during the game that we could have taken advantage of. When an official makes a call like that, it’s tough. It happens. We just have to get back to the drawing board and head to New England next week.”

On the defense

We couldn’t get stops at the end. They were running the football and getting critical yards at critical points of the game.”

General statement

“It’s tough to lose like we did today. But, at the end of the day we are still 4-2 and at the top of our division.”

LB D.J. WILLIAMS

On today’s loss to the Jaguars

“ We would always like to end the day with a victory but today we couldn’t do it. They have a grinding offense and they kept moving the chains. They have a lot of talent and we were not physical enough today.”

On the offensive turnovers

“We got our share of turnovers also. We hung with them till late in the game and in the end we couldn’t stop them on third downs and they were able to run the clock out. We played better defense today than we have been and we fought hard in the second half. We just have to move forward and keep fighting.”

CB CHAMP BAILEY

On the loss

“It is very frustrating for all of us. Anytime you lose it is a step backwards for the football team. We didn’t do what we needed to do today and we couldn’t get off the field on third downs late in the game.”

On Jacksonville’s squad

“These guys have good running backs. They run the ball and throw the ball very effectively. We just have to think positive and get better. We are fighters and we don’t quit. We will fight our way back and get some wins.”

RB MICHAEL PITTMAN

On his effort

“Of course I was upset about the results. I ran hard today but I didn’t do enough to help my team get a win. I went out and played my hardest but like I said it wasn’t good enough.”

On the loss

“There are no excuses. You can’t turn the ball over against a good team and Jacksonville is a very good team. They were obviously the better team today.”

On the turnovers

“We have to get what we can get and we turned the ball over when we were driving. I don’t want to say that we gave them the game, but anytime you have two or three turnovers it is difficult to win.”

More on his effort

I didn’t make enough plays to win the game. On the 4th and 1 I didn’t get the first down and that could have resulted in some points for us. We let them back in the game and gave them the momentum.”

(BRONCOS PLAYER NOTE: WR BRANDON STOKLEY LEFT THE GAME AFTER SUFFERING A CONCUSSION.)
