Pros: Coveted size and strength, looks to have good burst and adequate quickness.  High character player.  Played DE in a 4-3 his senior year, and picked up great habits with his lateral movement and agility.  Muscular, not soft, an impressive feat at that weight.

Cons:Was moved to defensive end because despite his size and strength was not showing he could beat double teams.  May project best as a 3-4 end. Did not show a lot of energy or hustle, but does not show lack of motivation or conditioning.

Styg's Broncos "fit":   This high character player is low value enigma. Two stars may seem low for a player with the terrific character of Hill and the incredible size, but this may be a case where the Broncos need to stay true to the fundamentals of their (likely) system. For all his girth and will, Hill has epic trouble beating double teams, and his coaches actually went out of their way to find ways to get him lined up one-on-one. He can be taken out of the game very easily and altitude may be the wrong place to try to teach him to take on double teams. A terriffic young man, but a poor fit for the 3-4 NT. For the truly adventurous, trying him at End is a possiblity, but reeks of gimmick.

From Broncobear's Tales: The Hunger of Sammie Lee Hill

Hill was about 270 coming out of high school and some didn’t expect him to keep right on growing. He seems to be a little bit of a late bloomer. And now?

“6'4, about 325, and around a 5.00 flat.” Glenn Dorsey had a 5.2 40.

Hill is comfortable with the thought of playing the 3-4 or the 4-3, and at DE, DT or NT. Or tight end, for that matter. And although he’s at peace with the factors that weigh against him; coming from a small school and with a short record at his unusual position, he expects to be successful at the next level. Why?

“For my size, I have tremendous athletic ability, I would say. I am hungry to play NFL Football.”

Scouting Reports and Offsite Links:

  • One of the more interesting prospects at the combine is Sammie Lee Hill, a defensive tackle from Stillman College. Hill is big (6-foot-3 plus, 329 pounds) and athletic (his vertical jump is 30 inches), and he has the versatility to play in the middle of a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme.

Keep an eye on this kid. He could end up as a surprise middle-round pick.  [see more...]
