From GM Duke TC: The Cincinnati Bengals have a long history of disappointing fans on draft day. The first five picks of the 2009 draft were tough for any Bengals fan to swallow. With pressing needs at tackle, defensive tackle, linebacker, and to a lesser extent wide receiver, it was particularly hard to see the elite talent slipping away. For this reason, I was looking for potential draft partners to trade down in the draft. The most appealing involved a swap with the giants that would have allowed for more significant rebuilding. BJ Raji was a tempting pick but the Bengals ranked 32nd in the league with 245 ypg and 32nd in the league with 12.8 ppg. Although Michael Oher is the third tackle selected in this draft, he was high on our board due to his massive frame and unmatched athleticism. Four years as a starter in the SEC provides Oher the necessary experience to make an impact from day one and help protect Carson Palmer's delicate left knee and right elbow for years to come. A brief look into Oher's past provides reassurance that he will be a positive influence in the Bengals' tumultuous locker room.
Commish's Thoughts: Oher is my favorite O-line Prospect in the 2009 draft, and I think the Bengals need a huge dose of what he provides. Is it too late for the Bengals to regain their offensive mojo? He is a huge upgrade in the passblocking department, and he should pick up on NFL runblocking quickly and be playing like a stud before the end of the season.
