From General Manager coloradosportsfan55: One of our primary needs in this draft is the defensive line and Stephen Paea is simply put, a beast. He is 300 plus pounds and is incredibly strong. Watching him do record 49 bench presses at 225 at the NFL combine solidified him as our number one target in the second round. We are very excited to have Stephen fall to us in the second round. He will add some much needed strength and bulk to vastly improve our poor run defense. He will require a large amount of attention on the inside of the line, which will free up some of our other defensive linemen to make plays. His strength will also allow him to put a great deal of pressure on quarterbacks.
Another thing that we like about Stephen is his attitude. In 2010, he was a candidate for college football’s Lott Trophy, which is awarded to the top division one defensive player who exhibits "integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity." He was a team captain for Oregon State in 2009 and 2010 as well.
We also look forward to working with Stephen Paea on his techniques. He is still very raw in this aspect of the game because only played football for three years before playing at Oregon State. With improvements to this part of his game, we believe Stephen could be one of the elite defensive tackles in the league.
