On This Day in Broncos History: November 15

Who remembers Tommy Maddox?

Richard Mackson-US PRESSWIRE

November 15, 1992 - the Broncos hosted the New York Giants and defeated them 27-13. There are two things which make this game of interest. The first item of note was that Denver had hosted the New York Jets the previous week and defeated the Giants’ cross-town rival 27-16. The second item that makes this an interesting game is that John Elway suffered a shoulder injury late in the second quarter and was replaced by rookie QB Tommy Maddox. Maddox finished the strong start by Elway.

You may remember that when Maddox was drafted by the Broncos in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft, it was widely believed that he would become Elway’s heir. However, Maddox started the next four games in Elway’s place and lost them all. The following season he attempted just one pass from scrimmage and his fate was set. He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 1994 for a fourth-round draft pick as the Broncos were forced to make the move by the salary cap.
