A closer look at the nominees:
- Colts prevail in Pagano’s return: Coach Chuck Pagano returned to the Indianapolis Colts’ sidelines following the indefinite leave he took on Sept. 26 to be treated for leukemia. Pagano’s inspired playoff-bound team capped an amazing turnaround campaign, improving from 2-14 a season ago to 11-5 this year following a 28-16 win over the AFC South division champion Houston Texans. QB Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes in the win, including a 70-yard scoring strike to WR T.Y. Hilton to clinch the victory
- Vikings ride Peterson to playoff berth: RB Adrian Peterson came within nine yards of breaking Hall of Fame RB ERIC DICKERSON‘s single-season rushing yardage record, but in the process propelled the Minnesota Vikings to their first playoff berth in three years. Peterson rushed for 199 yards as the Vikings defeated the Green Bay Packers, 37-34, on rookie kicker Blair Walsh’s winning field goal attempt to earn a wild-card playoff rematch at Lambeau Field.
- Broncos overcome 2-3 start to earn AFC’s top seed: The Denver Broncos claimed the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed with a 38-3 win over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs. QB Peyton Manning threw three touchdowns as the Broncos earned an 11th consecutive triumph. The Broncos managed to rally for home-field advantage despite opening the season 2-3.
