Elway’s Tunnel Vision on Manning will be His Undoing

In waiting to see what happens with Peyton Manning the Denver Broncos seem almost paralyzed in their pursuit of the veteran Free Agent QB. We are now through an entire week of Free Agency and Denver has only signed a third tier 30 year old safety. Denver has major needs across the board, and it seems that Elway is willing to wait until he has Manning before moving forward in addressing other needs. This appears to show he is putting his all eggs in a single basket, and doesn’t trust Xanders and Fox to go out and interview other free agents.

By now I was expecting to see Denver host/talk to 8-10 free agents and sign at least 4. Where is the visit with RB Michael Bush, Safety Laron Landry, and Wide Receiver Mike Wallace? Where is the game plan saying that we have these holes and need to see what we can fill? The only other free agent, Brandon Meriweather, that was brought in Denver couldn't get signed. This is very disturbing in the fact that Manning may be the only real signing if they get him. Even with Manning I have hard time believing that Denver will be good enough to go very far in the playoffs. The defense has plenty of holes throughout including all four positions on the entire line, middle linebacker, safety, and even cornerback. The only staples are Champ, Dumervile, and Von Miller. Every other position needs to get better.

On offense I am not so sure that Manning will have all the weapons he needs let alone have any kind of report with his receivers. Manning had been with the same guys who only knew that system for several years. Denver’s current roster doesn’t have a good pass catching Tight End or any true number two wideout behind Thomas. Without these pieces you are going to see a lot of failed drives because the receivers can’t run a Manning offense

Why haven’t we brought in Dallas Clark, someone that would help Manning and entice him to come here? It looks like Elway has stars in his eyes and has convinced himself that all things will be fine when Manning comes to Denver and we will address any holes with rookies in the draft. The bigger issue will come when all of the free agents are gone and if Denver doesn’t get Manning. What then?
