With the seventh pick in the 2012 MHR Community Mock draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select:
Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina
Jaguars GM: SteveUK
GM Explanation: I would be actively looking to trade down at this point for any team looking at Ryan Tannehill before the Dolphins pick and because I dont think there are any legitimate top 10 picks left. This would not pose too much of a problem as the two glaring needs for the Jaguars are a big possession receiver and a pass rushing defensive end, which they should be able to address later on in the round and early in the second. That said I am not sure anyone can accurately predict what Gene Smith is going to do and it would not surprise me if either Nick Perry or Alshon Jeffery come off the board at this point. Despite question marks over his effort at times this year I am going with Coples whose physical abilities and huge potential make him the best player at a position of need.
Commissioner's analysis: I think that Steve is on to something here. The Jaguars could really cash in here in a trade down (perhaps with our rival Kansas City Chiefs...) for someone to get Ryan Tannehill, but even if they traded down, I think Coples could wind up still being there and being the pick. He is a good pass rusher with great size and above average athletic ability. To me, he is a little bit of a risk but he has a lot of talent to work with and the Jaguars need some pass rushers. This would be a solid addition to their defensive line, but I agree with Steve, a trade down here to obtain more picks could be ideal.
