September 8, 2002 - Denver Broncos owner had stated that the goal for the 2002 season was to put the Broncos in a position to win the Super Bowl. They began that quest on September 8 when they opened their season by hosting the defending NFC Champion St. Louis Rams and won the game in an impressive fashion.

Denver scored first on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Brian Griese to Rod Smith in the first quarter. A second quarter Jason Elam field goal made it a 10-0 game. The Rams never got closer than 3 points behind the rest of the way out. Griese ended the night with two touchdown passes and Elam added three field goals to give the Broncos the 23-16 win.
