2013 Denver Broncos Training Camp: Week 2 Wrap-Up

Many of you read Kaptain Kirk's practice logs religiously--and for good reason.  Kirk has a unique style you don't see in many training camp reports.  They are very detailed especially when recording what goes on in 11 v 11 team drills.  The last five days I went through every one of Kirk's reports and compiled the information I'm presenting you today.  One thing to note, Kirk does not compile information when it comes to reception yardage.  For the QB's what you are getting is completion/attempt numbers along with TD's, INT's, and sacks. Every one of these practices occurred in full pads.

Thoughts

Dysert doesn't get a lot of reps.  He has moments and the last two days of practice he avoided turning the ball over which is a big improvement on the beginning of the week.  Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning.  Something I noted is that he had a different favorite target almost every practice.  You have to think that this is because he's testing different folks different days, and it is indicative of the kind of spread-it-around offense the Broncos will run.  You might see some quiet days from big names, but remember--this offense will hit you where it hurts the most and each guy will have his day in the sun.

RB's

A note to begin.  Both Hillman and Montee are 1a and 1b.  Both split reps with the 1's each practice.  Hillman always starts of first, and Montee also sees time with the 2's.  Behind them is a rotation of CJ Anderson (before the injury), Knowshon Moreno, and Lance Ball.  Hester rarely got any carries. A number of WR's and TE's received carries on an end around including Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Wes Welker, Trindon Holliday, and Julius Thomas.  The first numbers given are the carries and yardage (6-38 means six carries for thirty eight yards).  The other number (1/1) is receiving information the first number is amount of receptions, the 2nd number is targets.

Hillman: 4 carries 47 yards (11.75 YPC)

Montee:  8 carries 32 yards, 2TD, 1 reception (1 target)

Hillman: 3 carries, 12 yards (4.0 YPC), 2 receptions (2 targets)

Montee: 6 carries, 17 yards (2.8 YPC), 2 receptions (2 targets)

Overall

Hillman: 26 carries, 149 yards (5.7 YPC), 3 TD, 4 receptions 4 targets, 1 rec TD

Montee: 36 carries, 147 yards (4.1 YPC), 2 TD, 7 receptions 7 targets

Thoughts

Hillman has impressed me with his ability to get positive yardage.  I may have noted only one instance where he failed to gain a yard.  Not only that, he went through large stretches of carries where he would get 8,9,10 yards a pop.  He is a big play waiting to happen for sure.

With Montee, I was impressed how he finished off the last couple of days of practice consistently getting good yardage per carry.  He's also trusted quite a bit by both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler when it comes to catching the ball.

The greatest thing about both of our starters last week? NO FUMBLES!!!

The first number is receptions, the 2nd is targets.  For this one we'll skip best/worst performances.  The Big three play exclusively with the 1's.  DT did get a pass from Oz at one point.  Other than that, Caldwell is the fringe guy that sees reps with the 1's and 2's.  Robinson and King see the most time with the 2's (Robinson is Oz's go to guy), and the others rotate with the 2's and play with the 3's.

If I had to choose a pecking order right now it would be DT, Decker, Welker, Caldwell, and King in that order.  Something of note, when Welker was given the day off of practice, it was Caldwell who stepped in and played slot.  It was a very up and down day for him and Manning was verbally upset towards him on a couple of occasions.  Even still, I think he's the #4 guy right now purely because he could play both outside and inside if someone was injured.  I think he's a lock to make the team now.  Gerrell Robinson gets a lot of love from Brock Osweiler and Dysert for that matter but I don't think he's impressive enough at the moment to crack the top 5.

Julius Thomas and Virgil Green see time with the 1's with Thomas being more of a target for Peyton Manning.  Green also sees time with the 2's and gets looks from Brock.

DT: 16 receptions, 23 targets, 2 TD's

Decker: 8 receptions, 11 targets, 2 TD's

Welker: 10 receptions, 14 targets, 3 TD's

Julius: 10 receptions, 12 targets, 2 TD's
