Wes Welker injury: Broncos receiver has mild right ankle sprain

Wes Welker, the Broncos' prized free agent acquisition, should be ready for Denver's season opener on Sept. 5th after suffering an ankle injury in the preseason Saturday.

The Denver Broncos saw a glimpse of what the Peyton Manning to Wes Welker connection could do Saturday night in Seattle, as the Pro Bowl quarterback hit the Pro Bowl receiver for an 11-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. Welker had even been productive earlier, hauling in two other passes for 20 yards, while also tackling Kam Chancellor after the Seahawks safety recovered a Julius Thomas fumble.

But it was Welker's fearless, head-first dive into the end zone that was an orange and blue wonder to behold.

Unfortunately Denver's glimpse was just that - a short glimpse - as the touchdown ended up being Welker's last catch of the night. Denver's prized free agent acquisition left the game with an ankle injury.

There is good news. Moments ago, the Broncos updated Welker's status: he suffered a mild right ankle sprain in the loss.

Furthermore, ESPN reports that the Broncos expect Welker to be ready for their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens September 5th, "if all goes well."

Let's hope it does.
