Denver Broncos undrafted rookie linebacker Lerentee McCray was likely hours away from making an NFL roster. Now he may have to wait months.
McCray, an undrafted rookie linebacker out of Florida, limped gingerly to the sidelines during the third quarter of Thursday's 26-32 preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and would not return. Barely being able to put weight on his right foot, it was later revealed that the 249-pounder suffered a severe right ankle sprain.
After the game, McCray was seen in crutches and a walking boot, according to CBS 4.
"It's unfortunate that (McCray) got an ankle sprain," head coach John Fox said after the game. "I think he’s worked very hard this training camp. We’ll see where it goes."
Up to the point of his injury, McCray had been impressive. The rookie had started at strongside linebacker for the Broncos, registered three tackles, a sack, and forced a fumble in Denver's exhibition game with the Cardinals. The showing was even more impressive when you consider his blocked punt from the week before.
Now McCray's status with the Broncos is in limbo as John Fox faces what he calls some "very hard decisions." The NFL's deadline for each team to finalize its 53-man roster is Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Denver time.
