According to NFL Networks Ian Rapoport the Denver Broncos will sign rookie linebacker Shaquil Barrett from their Practice Squad to the teams active roster to replace injured linebacker Danny Trevathan's roster spot for now.
To replace LB Danny Trevathan for now, the #Broncos will promote Shaq Barrett from their practice squad— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 14, 2014
The Denver Broncos signed Barrett to a contract after he went undrafted during this past May's NFL Draft. Barrett had a pretty good Training Camp, and racked up 6 total tackles and 2 sacks for the Broncos during the preseason. Barrett was eventually waived during the final cuts, but was signed to the teams Practice Squad prior to the season opener.
The Broncos made this move because they placed linebacker Danny Trevathan on the injured reserve, but tagged designated to return after injuring his knee during this past Sunday's game against the New York Jets. Linebackers Brandon Marshall and rookie Corey Nelson are expected to take over for him in base/sub packages on defense.
Do not expect Barrett to help replace Trevathan on the field. Barrett is listed at 6'1 260lbs, and is more of an edge rusher/defensive end then a weak-side linebacker/coverage linebacker like Trevathan was. If Barrett is active come game day he would contribute on special teams and could be used as an extra linebacker. However I would expect Barrett to be a game day inactive at least early on with linebackers Lamin Barrow, Steven Johnson and Lerentee McCray ahead of him on the depth chart.
