Broncos place Montee Ball and Quinton Carter on season-ending injured reserve

A tough break for Ball and Carter.

The Broncos on Saturday placed running back Montee Ball and safety Quinton Carter on the team's injured reserve list, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

Denver placed the two players on IR after activating linebacker Danny Trevathan (injured) and tight end Dominique Jones (practice squad) to the 53-man roster. Trevathan is expected to contribute immediately on defense and Jones may see time on special teams if Jacob Tamme (ribs) is unable to play against San Diego.

Ball has been battling a groin injury all season and became expendable with the emergence C.J. Anderson. Denver also expects to have Ronnie Hillman back from injury in time for their season finale against Oakland, accoding to Klis.

Carter has been battling the injury bug since starting ten games as a rookie in 2012. Klis speculated that Carter may have played "his last game" in Denver.

Without Ball, Anderson will remain Denver's No. 1 back going forward. Juwan Thompson will be the No. 2 back at least until Hillman returns and Jeremy Stewart is expected to remain the team's emergency third back on game days.

Ball, 24, rushed 55 times for 172 yards (3.1 YPC) and one score five games this season.
