Buzz: Broncos looking to upgrade at safety

Could T.J Ward or Jairus Byrd be a Bronco here in the coming days?

There is a lot of rumors and buzz going around about who teams will be targeting when free agency opens at March 11 at 4 p.m. ET. The buzz surrounding our Denver Broncos seems to be focusing on the safety position.

First there was the report back in mid February that the Denver Broncos were interested in recently released safety Louis Delmas, then just yesterday we shared with you a report from Joe Person that the Broncos were interested in free agent safety Mike Mitchell.

Now the Denver Post's Mike Klis posted an article this morning talking about how the Denver Broncos could look to copy the Seattle's Seahawks blueprint at the safety position.

So what free agents could the Broncos target once Free Agency opens Tuesday afternoon? Klis mentions Cleveland Browns safety T.J Ward among others as a potential target for the Broncos.

The Broncos are going to attempt to upgrade the position. They are expected to pursue Cleveland strong safety T.J. Ward when the free-agent market opens Tuesday. They also have expressed interest in Detroit safety Louis Delmas, while the Pro Bowl likes of Jairus Byrd and Donte Whitner also are available.

Add this speculation with CBS4's Vic Lombardi who tweeted this out this morning.

It all adds up to the likelihood the Broncos will pursue safety first.

Good thing, too. Former Denver Bronco John Lynch had a lot to say on the subject.

"The position is ignored but yet in the playoffs, there seems to be a safety who's extremely instrumental during the (postseason) run," said former Broncos safety John Lynch, now an NFL broadcaster for the Fox network. "Bernard Pollard a couple years ago with Baltimore. You saw with the Broncos in the Super Bowl, Kam Chancellor in many ways took over that game."

Lynch does bring up a very good point. Bernard Pollard, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Bob Sanders, Charles Woodson, and Troy Polamalu were all very important to teams that have won Super Bowls recently.

They always say where there's smoke there is fire. If this is the case, look for the Broncos to be connected to the top free agent safeties on the market come Tuesday afternoon. I for one hope they nab one of the top guys. Only time will tell.
