2014 NFL mock draft: CB Justin Gilbert to Detroit Lions with 10th pick

With the 10th pick in the 2014 Mile High Report Community Mock Draft, Detroit Lions GM OregonBronco selects...

There are a lot of ways to go with this pick. A mate for Megatron makes a ton of sense, but Detroit has been burned in the past by selecting receivers too high, and they already doled out a good deal of money to Golden Tate in free agency. With Sammy Watkins off the board, it makes a lot of sense to head to the other side of the ball. Like Denver, Detroit has a high octane offense and they aim to play with the lead. At the same time, the defense, and specifically the secondary for the Lions has been suspect. Taking the the top corner in the class is an easy choice.

With the 10th overall pick in the MHR Community Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select...

Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State

The Lions could go with the home state favorite, Michigan State's Darqueze Dennard; however, the combine numbers that Gilbert give him the edge as the top corner in the draft.

Gilbert is an athletic freak, and quite possibly the most athletic player in the entire draft. Gilbert's talents as a cover corner are undeniable, his tight coverage and physicality make it tough on opposing receivers to get open and make receptions. The Oklahoma State corner is also an asset on special teams, and would provide a spark to the Lions' kick and punt return teams, which have combined for just 3 return TDs since the 2010 season.

Gilbert is the first step in building a strong secondary unit in Detroit, to go along with their high-powered offense.
