Horse Tracks: Tough decisions loom for Broncos

The Broncos have to make a slew of transactions today. Who makes it?

Tom Pennington

The Denver Broncos began trimming their roster down to 53 guys today by releasing/waiving seven players. The seven players who the Broncos released/waived are linebacker L.J Fort, defensive tackle Sione Fua, cornerback Jerome Murphy, cornerback Jordan Sullen, offensive lineman Ryan Miller, and tight ends Cameron Morrah and Jameson Konz

That leaves the Broncos with 68 players currently on the roster so they still have at least 15 roster moves to make before the 2 p.m. (mountain time) deadline on saturday.

Those 15 roster moves will not be easy for the Broncos. There's a lot of depth at each position, so lets take a look at the remaining 68 players on the Denver Broncos roster, and who I expect to make it.

Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Zac Dysert:

The big decision here is whether or not to keep Zac Dysert. I have been thinking that Dysert will make the roster. I didn't think John Elway would give up on his young quarterback just yet. However i'm starting to lean towards the Broncos only keeping two quarterbacks on the active roster/

Who stays(2):

Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler

Running Back:

Montee Ball, Ronnie Hillman, Juwan Thompson, C.J Anderson, and Kapri Bibbs:

I have a hard time keeping Kapri Bibbs off the roster. The only problem is who does he kick off the final 53?

Fellow rookie Juwan Thompson has secured a roster spot in my opinion after having a very good preseason. Third year player Ronnie Hillman had a very good summer and is probably your backup to Montee Ball heading into the season. That leaves C.J Anderson and Kapri Bibbs.

I think waiving C.J Anderson will be discussed by the Broncos. Kapri Bibbs has looked really good this preseason, and has shown a nose for the end zone.

I'm glad i do not have to make that decision.

Who stays(6):

Montee Ball, Ronnie Hillman, Juwan Thompson and Kapri Bibbs

Wide Receiver:

Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Wes Welker, Andre Caldwell, Cody Latimer, Isaiah Burse, Bennie Fowler, and Nathan Palmer:

I think this group is pretty well set.

Who stays(12):

Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Wes Welker, Bubba Caldwell, Cody Latimer and Isaiah Burse

Tight End:

Julius Thomas, Virgil Green, Jacob Tamme, Gerell Robinson

Thomas, Green and Tamme are all locks to make the roster in my opinion.

The only question here is if they will keep a forth tight end or not. Gerell Robinson was having a solid summer before suffering an ankle injury during the 49ers game. If he's not close to returning he could be a candidate for the injured reserve. I think the odds are against Robinson though.

Who stays(15):

Julius Thomas, Jacob Tamme, and Virgil Green

Offensive Line:

Ryan Clady, Orlando Franklin, Manny Ramirez, Louis Vasquez, Chris Clark, Paul Cornick, William Montgomery, Ben Garland, Matt Paradis, Vinston Painter, and Michael Schofeild.

Your starters(from left to right) will be Clady, Franklin, Ramirez, Vasquez and Clark.

That's the easy part.

The tough part will be naming their backups. None of the Broncos backups really impressed during the preseason, and were maddeningly inconsistent at times.

Who makes it(24):

Clady, Franklin, Ramirez, Vasquez, Clark, Schofield, Montgomery, Garland, and Painter

Defensive End:

Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, DeMarcus Ware, Quanterus Smith, Kenny Anunike, and Brian Sanford

This is a pretty easy group to figure out. Wolfe and Jackson will be your left defensive ends while Ware and Smith will rush the passer from the right side.

I had hopes that Kenny Anunike would make the team but he suffered an elbow injury during thursday nights playoff game.

Who makes it(28):

Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, Quanterus Smith and DeMarcus Ware

Defensive Tackle:

Terrence Knighton, Sylvester Williams, Marvin Austin, Kevin Vickerson, and Mitch Unrein

This will be probably be the toughest group the predict. It appears that Knighton and Williams will be our starters week one while Austin has locked up the third defensive tackle spot. After those three it's Unrein and Vickerson. Neither has looked all that bad this preseason so cutting one would tough.

It's a possibility they go with five defensive tackles which would keep both Unrein and Vickerson

Who makes it(33):

Knighton, Williams, Austin, Vickerson and Unrein

Von Miller, Nate Irving, Danny Trevathan, Lerentee McCray, Lamin Barrow, Brandon Marshall, Steven Johnson, Shaq Barrett, and Corey Nelson.

Von Miller, Nate Irving and Danny Trevathan/Brandon Marshall will be your starters.

Lerentee McCray has played great during the preseason and he will backup Von Miller, Barrow will be Nate Irvings backup and I think rookie Corey Nelson will backup Brandon Marshall while Danny Trevathan recovers from an injury.

Who makes it(40):

Von Miller, Nate Irving, Danny Trevathan, Brandon Marshall, Lamin Barrow, Lerentee McCray and Corey Nelson

Aqib Talib, Chris Harris, Bradley Roby, Kayvon Webster, Omar Bolden, Tony Carter, and Louis Young

This group is pretty much set in my opinion. Talib, Harris, Roby and Webster have locked up spots. Bolden, Carter and Young are battling for the 5th and 6th roster spots.

Who makes it(45):

Aqib Talib, Chris Harris, Bradley Roby, Kayvon Webster and Omar Bolden

Rahim Moore, T.J Ward, Quinton Carter, David Bruton, Duke Ihenacho, John Boyett

The Broncos will keep five safeties I think. The first four are locks in my opinion. The fifth is where the competition was at, and I think will be the tough decision for the Broncos,

Who makes it(50):

Rahim Moore, T.J Ward, Quinton Carter, David Bruton and Duke Ihenacho

Special Teams:

Matt Prater, Brandon McManus, Britton Colquitt and Aaron Brewer

The only question here is whether or not the Broncos keep McManus on the roster after his two for four performance on thursday night.

Who makes it(53):

Matt Prater(suspended), Brandon McManus, Britton Colquitt and Aaron Brewer
