Breaking it down into quarters, almost half of the roster is comprised of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft picks.  Another quarter of the roster is comprised of 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round draft picks.  It astonishes me that almost a quarter of the current Broncos roster is comprised of UDFA.

Broncos drafts under John Elway

John Elway has been in charge since 2011.  Over that period of time, the Broncos have made 29 draft picks.  From those 29 picks, 9 starters have been yielded.  22 of them are still with the team.

(Those that have been cut are Mike Mohammed, Jeremy Beal, Vinston Painter, Phillip Blake, Zac Dysert, Tavarres King, Matt Paradis)

By contrast Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have drafted 31 players in the same time frame.  From those 31 picks, 7 have become starters, and 20 remain with the team.

Roster make-up, Draft vs. Free Agency

Elway's Draft Picks (22, 40.7%)

Osweiler, Ball, Hillman, Latimer, Thomas, Green, Franklin, Schofield

Smith, Wolfe, Jackson, WIlliams, Miller, Irving, Barrow, Trevathan, Nelson, Roby, Webster, Bolden, Moore, Q. Carter

Elway's Free-Agent signings (14, 25.9%)

Manning, Sanders, Caldwell, Welker, Tamme, Ramirez, Vasquez, Montgomery

Ware, Knighton, Austin, Marshall, Talib, Ward

Elway's UDFA signings (9, 16.7%)

Anderson, Thompson, Burse, Cornick

Johnson, McCray, Harris Jr., Brewer, McManus

45/53 85% of the roster has been shaped by a John Elway personnel decision.

The rest of the roster (9, 16.7%)

Demaryius Thomas: 1st round pick in 2010 (McDaniels)

Ryan Clady: 1st round pick in 2008 (Shanahan)

Ben Garland: UDFA 2010 (McDaniels)

Chris Clark: waiver addition 2010 (McDaniels)

Mitch Unrein: PS addition late 2010 (McDaniels)

Tony Carter: 2009 UDFA (McDaniels)

Britton Colquitt: 2009 waiver addition (McDaniels)
