Broncos coaching search: Denver is serious about Gary Kubiak

New, comments

No doubt Gary Kubiak is wearing an "I'm kind of a big deal" T-shirt under his suit Sunday.

It certainly looks like the Denver Broncos are serious about Gary Kubiak. The gang's all in Houston Sunday to interview him.

  • Joe Ellis is the Broncos' CEO and Team President. In other words, John Elway's boss. The Broncos are in his hands right now as Pat Bowlen has stepped down as he battles Alzheimer's.
  • John Elway is the Broncos' Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager. He's the main man who will make this hire.
  • Matt Russell is the Broncos' Director of Player Personnel. Whether it's college or professional, he's Elway's right-hand man when it comes to roster-building.
  • Tom Heckert is the Broncos' Director of Pro Personnel.

The Broncos have only had two other interviews - Cincinnati Bengals secondary coach Vance Joseph and Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Both of those interviews occurred in Denver. Gase has since interviewed for an offensive coordinator job in Jacksonville, which would be an odd move if he was being seriously considered.

Meanwhile, ESPN reports that Kubiak would accept the job if offered. Due to the NFL's Championship Sunday and the Martin Luther King holiday Monday, an announcement from the Broncos would be expected Tuesday.

Reading the tea leaves/fight itineraries, the Broncos' actions certainly lend credence to the theory that Gary Kubiak is the heavy favorite, and a second interview might not even be needed.
