With the news breaking today that Vernon Davis was traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Denver Broncos, I thought I would hit up David Fucillo from Niners Nation for a little Q&A on Davis and how he might fit into the Broncos offense with Peyton Manning at the helm.
What are your thoughts on the trade that landed Vernon Davis in Denver?
I'm happy Vernon gets a chance to finish off the season with a contender. I'm even more happy that the 49ers landed more than a stack of Jamba Juice coupons for him. He had an awful 2014 season, which seemed to be due to injuries. His 2015 was not going much better, although he had a solid game against Seattle. He's a free agent after this season, and he was not going to be back, so honestly, getting anything for him is a win for the 49ers.
What would you attribute the drop off in Vernon Davis' production over the last two years?
I think injuries were part of the problem, but I also think Vernon can be easily distracted. He held out of the offseason workout program in 2014, worrying about his brand. I'm fine with that, but Vernon definitely was a little out of sorts once he did return. I think injuries factored in, but the offense as a whole went in the tank the last two seasons. It's so hard right now to sort through how much blame belongs to Vernon, and how much is split between Colin Kaepernick, the offensive line and the offensive coaching staff. I think he has a little something left in the tank, but we'll find out for sure.
Do you think he can flourish with a guy like Peyton Manning running the offense?
Yea, I think it could help him. Vernon can be great on crossing routes, and is still a tough matchup for safeties and linebackers in the seam route. I'm fascinated to see what he does with Manning.
Was Davis becoming a distraction in the locker room and if so, will that continue in Denver?

The 49ers locker room is all kinds of problematic. He and Joe Staley got into an altercation, and while both have denied it got physical, I've heard enough reports and rumblings that it did. Rumor has it the two got into it in early October when Vernon was rehabbing a knee injury. There is some thought that he was not nearly as hurt as he thought, and Staley may have called him on it. Then they reportedly got into it over Kap in the locker room after the Thursday Night Football game. There are plenty of denials, and nothing is 100 percent clear, but clearly things were not going to end well between them.
I think going to a winning team, and one with a dominant personality like Manning will help get him on track. I think it is a good addition for the Broncos
