Fantasy football waiver wire: David Johnson and Scott Chandler headline list of must-add players for Week 13

Here's a TE and RB that you must claim in fantasy football this week.

Editor's note: Ian will have his usual fantasy piece published later this week. In the meantime, here are a few of Jon's thoughts on the fantasy football world for this week and beyond.

With only five NFL games left to go and many leagues already entering the playoffs, it's rare to find waiver wire gems this time of year. This week, there are two gems that need to be owned in every league.

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is "week-to-week" with a right knee injury, so he may not even return until your fantasy season is over. In the meantime, Scott Chandler will be New England's top tight end, making him a must-add.

Chandler caught five passes for 58 yards and a score against Denver's top-ranked defense, and his role should increase going forward. This week, he has a dreamy match up against a miserable Eagles secondary. Go add him now.

Meanwhile in Arizona, the Cardinals have placed running back Chris Johnson on their injured reserve list with designation to return (meaning he won't be back until the Super Bowl, if they make it that far). Arizona's No. 2 RB, Andre Ellington has turf toe, putting his status for this week in doubt.

Those injuries open the door for David Johnson to breakout, and he will. As a rookie, Johnson has rushed 35 times for 139 yards (four yards per carry) and four touchdowns. With an increased role in a high-scoring Cardinals offense, Johnson arguable becomes a RB1 this week.

If he starts this week, Johnson needs to be in your lineup.

Other NFL players to add this week

Probably not availableShaun Draughn (RB), Crockett Gillmore (TE), Theo Riddick (RB), Kamar Aiken (WR), Rueben Randle (WR), Javorius Allen (RB), Steve Johnson (WR), DeSean Jackson (WR), and Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB) are sexy names, but they're probably not available in your league. If any of them are, put in a claim.

Put in a claimDavid Johnson (RB), Scott Chandler (TE), and Doug Baldwin (WR).

Don't be fooled: Demaryius Thomas is still worth starting as a WR1 going forward. Brandon Bolden is a boom-or-bust running back, with high bust potential. If you must start a Pats RB not named LeGarrette Blount, James White has more boom potential than Bolden.

Worth a lookMarkus Wheaton (WR) had a big game on Sunday, and that may signal more targets for him to come. With Martellus Bennett dinged up, Zach Miller (TE) is worth a look. With Jimmy Graham out,  Luke Willson (TE) is also worth a peek. Other risky tight end plays inlcude Kyle Rudolph and Vernon Davis. Frank Gore is wearing down and Ahmad Bradshaw is out, so Dan Herron (RB) is worth consideration. Charcandrick West should be back this week, but Spencer Ware (RB) is a good handcuff. Fellow running backs Antonio Andrews and Jay Ajayi should be considered if available. Receivers Devin Funchess, Seth RobertsCecil Shorts III, DeVante Parker, and Tavon Austin all have upside.

Worth a stash: If Stefon Diggs (WR) was dropped in your league, he's worth adding to your bench. If nothing else, you'll prevent him from having a big game against you in the playoffs. The same goes for Austin Seferian-Jenkins (TE), Tyler Lockett (WR), and J. J. Nelson (WR).

Sleeper: In PRR leagues, Fred Jackson is worth a look.

Coma: In San Diego, Donald Brown (RB) is stealing a few touches.
