Newly signed Broncos specialist Karl Schmitz can kickoff, punt, and hit 70-yard field goals

Denver signed a interesting punter prospect Thursday.

Karl Schmitz, who grew up in Bermuda and graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2011, has signed with the Broncos, the team announced. 2015 will be his rookie season.

He handled punts and kickoffs for Jacksonville University in 2008 before transferring to UMSL, per the team's official website. As of 2013, Schmitz was 6-4 and weighed 215 pounds.

Denver did not list his age, but if he graduated in 2011, he's probably around 26 years old.

Schmitz has been out of football for some time, but he has continued kicking. He has numerous prospect videos on YouTube and has worked with the ProForm Kicking Academy in Florida.

The Broncos have him listed as a punter, but he can also kick field goals. He booted a 70-yarder in the video below:

Usually, undrafted specialists invited to camp are long shots to make the team. Schmitz is a long shot, make no mistake, but Denver's kicking situation is far from finalized.

After releasing kicker Matt Prater last October, Denver ultimately ended up caring three specialists: Brandon McManus for kickoffs, Connor Barth for field goals, and Britton Colquitt for punting. All three players are under contract for 2016, but carrying three specialists is not ideal.

Colquitt is a prime candidate to be cut. He earned $2 million in 2014 and is scheduled to make $3 million this season. His 44.2-yard punting average last season ranked 25th out of 32 starting punters.

Cutting Colquitt would save $2.25 million in salary cap room (it would also create $1.5 million in dead money). If Schmitz performs well in training camp, Colquitt could become expendable.

Schmitz is a long shot, but he has a shot.
