According to Pro Football talk, linebacker/edge rusher Shane Ray is getting some interest from teams picking in the late first round.
Take Two - Shane Ray getting more interest from teams in late first round after pot citation http://t.co/YQrdtuIIcf— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) April 29, 2015
The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the year Shane Ray was cited for marijuana possession earlier this week. This has lead to some speculation that he may fall out of the first round because of this lapse in judgement.
With Ray now expected to fall a bit on Thursday night, teams picking in the late first round are beginning to show more interest in a prospect who was considered a top 5 to 10 pick a month or so ago.
The report doesn't list which teams are showing interest in Ray, but I'm guessing the Denver Broncos could be one of them.
They recently released pass rusher, Quanterus Smith after he failed a physical and do not have much depth behind starters Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Also, Von Miller is heading into the final year of his contract, and DeMarcus Ware isn't getting any younger. So it would make some sense for the Broncos to at least consider Ray.
Ray would give the Broncos another electric pass rusher who could be the heir apparent to veteran DeMarcus Ware. You can never have enough pass rushers in today's NFL.
He does come with some risks. He is now entered into stage one of the league's substance abuse program. He also has a turf toe injury that may require surgery which would sideline him for about 5 months. If he does have this surgery he will likely begin the season on the PUP list.
Ray is talented but has his red flags. I think the Broncos will at least consider him if he's available when they're on the clock. He's a top 10 talent who could be a giant steal for some team picking in the late first round.
What do you think? Is Shane Ray worth the risk for the Broncos, or would you rather stay away from him?
