2015 NFL Draft: Scouting Denver Broncos nose tackle Darius Kilgo

I really like the Broncos' sixth round pick.

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos selected former Maryland defensive tackle Darius Kilgo in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was ranked as the 330th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft according to CBS Sports, and was ranked as the 27th best defensive tackle in the draft.

Kilgo played four seasons at Maryland and was a disruptive force for their defense. During his four-year career at Maryland he totaled 125 tackles, 19.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 3 pass deflections and 1 forced fumble.

Scouting Report:

Strengths:

  • Has really good upper body strength
  • Rarely gets moved backwards
  • Solid run defender
  • Looks like a nose tackle
  • Fires off the line
  • Has strong. physical, and aggressive hands
  • Moves well in space
  • A one gap nose tackle
  • Experienced, a three-year starter
  • Can be a "bully" on the defensive line

Weaknesses:

  • Plays a little too upright sometimes
  • Not a pass rusher
  • Needs to improve his hand technique at the point of attack
  • Needs to disengage blocks better
  • Doesn't have the strongest lower half
  • His snap anticipation needs to be improved

My thoughts:

I like this pick.

He's a one-gap defensive tackle which is exactly what Wade Phillips is looking for. He does need some work on his game, but defensive line coach Bill Kollar should be able the get the best out of him.

I think he will be a rotational guy who will compete with Williams and Austin for playing time.

Intriguing pick by the Broncos.
