Horse Tracks: Hall of Fame edition

Putting the John Elway, Gary Zimmerman, Floyd Little, and Shannon Sharpe inductions aside, Hall of Fame weekend is usually a depressing time for Broncos fans. For whatever reason, the Denver Broncos are underrepresented when it comes to bronze busts in Canton. Over the years, there have been many theories as to why, but today it may be time to think differently about it.

Every year the selection process is the same. A huge list of notable players gets whittled down over a series of cuts to just eighteen finalists.

In advance of the Hall of Fame Selection Meeting in February... each of the nominees is thoroughly discussed by the committee before a series of reduction votes are taken.

(For the complete Hall of Fame selection process, here's a link.)

The 'discussion' noted above is kicked off by a presentation given by the sports writer from that players home market. The Denver Broncos representative is ESPN writer Jeff Legwold. When it comes down to it, it's Legwold's job to 'sell' great Broncos to the Hall of Fame committee. Next year, it will have been half a decade since the Broncos got a new bust in Canton.

So here's the question: Is it out of bounds for Broncos fans to critically look at Legwold's efforts? The man clearly has passion for the Broncos and the city of Denver. If more Hall of Fame finalists fail to become Hall of Famers how should Broncos fans view his role in the process? Is it fair to even ask these questions? Should Hall of Fame voters be scrutinized by the teams, players, and fans they represent in the selection process? What does Terrell Davis think? I wonder.
