The Denver Broncos are out of the playoffs, so these power rankings aren’t going to be all that high anymore.

So, the guys behind desks didn't seem to care that we had the ugliest loss in our team’s recent memory. It barely registered. It seems they, like me, saw the Tennessee loss as the nail and wrote us off then. Plus, there are so many other teams far worse off than us.

Not often that both Super Bowl teams miss the playoffs altogether the following season. In fact, it hasn't happened since 2003, when the Raiders fell apart and Jon Gruden couldn't will his champion Bucs back into the postseason. That Tampa outfit was quite similar to the 2016 Broncos, dependent on an oft-dominant defense to lift the offense to wins, despite the presence of two quality wideouts (Keyshawn Johnson and Keenan McCardell).

A Super Bowl champ missing the playoffs the next year isn't that uncommon; it has now happened 16 times in the Super Bowl era. But this Broncos team started 4-0 and then went 4-7. The Broncos can still finish with a winning record with a win against the Raiders on Sunday.

Denver is going to have to look long and hard at the roster this offseason, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The quarterback position has been underwhelming all year long, which is part of the reason for Denver missing the playoffs.

After a five-year run that included five division titles, two AFC championships and a Super Bowl title, it was surprising to see the Broncos go down so quietly in a blowout loss on Sunday night as they were eliminated from the playoffs. We’ll see how Denver retools this offseason, but no matter what happens down the road, this was a great stretch.
