Good Morning, Broncos Country.
The Denver Broncos used their first-round selection on Memphis product Paxton Lynch in the 2016 NFL Draft, but their decision to not sign another veteran quarterback to the roster has Mark Sanchez excited about the prospect of starting this year for the team.
According to Broncos Executive Vice President and General Manager John Elway, the team is not expected to add another quarterback to the roster over the course of camp and the preseason. That will allow Sanchez, Lynch and second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian to receive all the reps during that time period in a three-way battle to see who will come out on top and lead the Broncos on the gridiron this coming season.
Though excited about his chances of starting for the squad, Sanchez was also adamant that he would give as much advice and tutelage to the young quarterbacks on the roster as possible. Demonstrating that even in a heated competition, he is approaching the situation with dignity and professionalism.
"You've got to be yourself," Sanchez stated yesterday at Dove Valley according to the teams' official website. "And if you're confident in your ability, you have no problem helping a guy -- whether it's protections, reads, footwork, anything like that."
Since becoming a Bronco, Sanchez has taken initiative to become a leader on the team and familiarize himself with other players on the roster by attending sporting events and holding a camp with offensive players in California to get up to speed with how things work in Denver. Such actions have earned him the respect of his new teammates and coaches in his short time with the franchise.
Expect Sanchez to make the most of his opportunity and play his heart out to be Denver's opening day starter this season, but don't sleep on the two young quarterbacks behind him who will be eager to show the Broncos brass that they have what it takes to lead the defending Super Bowl champions in 2016.
Sound off in the comments section and make your case for who you believe will be the Broncos' starting quarterback.
As always, thanks for reading and here are today's Horse Tracks.
