Today we continue our annual 90 player roster breakdown in 90 days. If you missed the previous player breakdowns, you can check them out here.
Name: Lorenzo Doss
Position: CB
Height: 5'11" Weight: 187
Age: 22 Experience: 2
College: Tulane
Elway hasn't had a ton of success drafting in the 5th round ever since the Malik Jackson pick (which granted is about the pinnacle of success for the 5th round). Our three subsequent 5th round picks never contributed meaningful snaps and are now off the team.
Lorenzo Doss will hopefully buck that trend.
The Good: Lorenzo came out of college with 15 recorded INTs in 3 seasons with Tulane. Although small, his strengths are his change of direction, and willingness to attack the ball in the air. His overaggressive play cost him some in college, but for the most part paid off as he became known as a ball hawk. When he was drafted, John Elway said "He has tremendous ball skills and cover skills, so we're excited about getting him.
With Kayvon Webster on the last year of his contract, Doss has a chance to move up into the 4th corner slot next season This year, he might have an opportunity to dress more and contribute on special teams with several of our special teams aces in the secondary no longer on the team.
We'll get to the not playing any snaps in the "bad" section, but because of that, it was hard to find any good plays of Doss. I was finally able to find this nice play from last year's pre-season action.
The Texans are driving to try and get in position for a Hail Mary at the end of regulation and need to get out of bounds with no timeouts. Doss recognizes the leak out from the TE and comes off of his man to make a play and keep the runner in bounds, ending the game. A good example of his quickness and aggressive play-making.
The Bad: Doss is "stuck" in the most talented position group in the NFL which means he will likely be relegated to the bench and special teams again this year unless (knock on wood) we see some injuries in our cornerback group. The only game he saw any significant snaps was the Week 14 Raiders game and that was on special teams, he made use of that time by being flagged for holding on a punt return.
Quotable: Not much has been said about Doss lately, and he hasn't said much either. At this stage of his career and his roster position, no news is good news because it means he's keeping his head down, not getting into trouble, and going to work. But, it was pretty cool to see him getting involved in giving back to the community a few months ago. Check out the tweet and photos below.

Status: Despite him probably not dressing much this coming year, I think he has a good chance to make the roster as the 5th corner. I see us only keeping 5 CBs this year, so he could potentially be fighting his old teamate Nixon for a roster slot, but I feel pretty good about us 'redshirting' Doss one more year and letting him step into Webster's role next season.
