Sankey is a 6'2", 250lb linebacker who figures to add depth and competition to the inside linebacker position for the Broncos. He will be competing for a roster spot with Todd Davis, Corey Nelson, Dekoda Watson, Zaire Anderson, and with fellow rookies Frank Shannon and Dwayne Norman.
Sankey played four seasons at Sacramento State and put up some solid numbers while there. During his four seasons he totaled 330 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 27.5 tackles for a loss, one interception, nine passes defended, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. This past season Sankey totaled 153 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 9 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble and 5 passes defended.
One cool tidbit here is that the Broncos now have three former Sacramento State players on their roster. Potential starter Todd Davis, rookie offensive tackle Lars Hanson, and now rookie inside linebacker Darnell Sankey.
I think his odds of making the team are slim right now. He was signed pretty late into the offseason and has missed the entire offseason program, but there appears to be some talent there. It will be interesting to see if he makes a name for himself early in camp.
To make room for Sankey on the roster, the Broncos released rookie long snapper, Nathan Theus. This means that the Broncos currently only have one long snapper on the roster. The long snapping job appears to be Casey Kreiter's job to lose during Training Camp.
