Broncos name Trevor Siemian the starting quarterback

Siemian vs. Cam to open up the NFL season.

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos announced that second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian would be the starting quarterback for the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos

Siemian started the offseason competing for the starting quarterback job with veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez and continued the battle into the preseason. Sanchez's turnovers put him behind Siemian and eventually first-round rookie Paxton Lynch, and Sanchez could be cut very soon. It's likely that Lynch will be the backup for Siemian heading into the regular season.

Siemian will now open up the NFL regular season starting against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. The story will be a late seventh-round pick overlooked by everyone to get the starting job for the defending Super Bowl champs. It is a good story and hopefully it ends well for the Broncos and Siemian.

In three preseason games, Siemian completed 27 of 43 passes (62.8%) for 285 yards (6.6 yards per play), 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Siemian only has one regular season snap in his career, and it was a kneel down against the Pittsburgh Steelers to go into halftime. Now he will step onto the big stage, with all of America watching, and an angry Carolina defense looking for revenge over the Super Bowl loss.
