Happy Wednesday, Country.
Yesterday, the Denver Broncos trimmed their roster to 75 players. With the season on the horizon, the team will make additional moves shortly after their final preseason game in order to get to the magic number of 53.
Only the top 51 salaries on any given team count towards the salary cap and the Broncos released several players, including Garrett Graham and Britton Colquitt that were a part of that category, but no longer are. According to OverTheCap, yesterday's cuts now give the Broncos roughly $8.7 million dollars in cap space for the 2016 season.
That number could go up even more if the team decides to cut or better yet, trade quarterback Mark Sanchez or release other players (such as Ronnie Hillman) and give them the space necessary to extend wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.
However, the Broncos are not obligated to spend any of that money this year and do have the option of rolling over any unused cap space into the 2017 season. If they went this route, they could have as much as $50 million dollars to spend in free agency and their rookie draft class next season in order to bolster the squad.
That is an impressive amount of cap space and the team already has 46 players under contract for next season. Don't forget that the franchise will also boast a high number of draft picks (as many as ten, if not more) and figure to have five selections in the Top 100 picks in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Most certainly, you can count on John Elway making some big splashes in order to have the Broncos competing for championships on a consistent basis.
What would you like to see the Broncos do with the cap space that they have? Sound off in the comments section and give us your own personal scenarios.
