On Monday, Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway told reporters that "There's a lot of bright young guys out there with a lot of potential. Hopefully, we can get 1 of those." in regarding a Head Coach. So many assumed the Broncos were searching for a bright young coach like Atlanta Falcons Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan or Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph, and not an older coach.
Well, the Broncos threw everyone for a loop when they asked and received permission to interview 54 year old Dave Toub, the Special Teams coach for the rival Kansas City Chiefs.
Toub figures to be a busy man in the coming days as he has interviews with two AFC West teams, the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos.
Toub told reporters a few weeks ago that more and more Special Teams coaches are getting recognized for Head Coaching gigs.
"It’s something that if it happens, it happens," Toub said. "I just like the fact that more and more special-teams coaches are being recognized as guys that could be head coaches. The awareness is getting better and I think someday somebody is going to pull the trigger on a guy."
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid called Special Teams coaches a "unique breed" because they deal with the entire roster unlike Offensive or Defensive coaches.
"Special-teams coaches are a unique breed," Reid said. "They don’t get enough credit for what they do and what they have to deal with. They deal with the media, the offense, the defense, they deal with the whole gamut. They come out of a game, and not everything’s perfect," Reid said. "They’re dealing with the whole roster. Within special teams there’s an offense and a defense. … I just think they are as close to anybody as ready to be a head coach."
Reid believes this experience makes them more ready to be Head Coaches in the NFL than an offensive/defensive coordinator or positional coach.
The Broncos are currently scheduled to travel to Kansas City on Friday to interview Toub, and then heading to the Atlanta area on Saturday to interview Kyle Shanahan for the Broncos Head Coaching job.
Elway said he was excited about "3 or 4 candidates" and right now the Broncos have three interviews lined up, will there be a fourth? or are the Broncos Head Coaching list down to three candidates?
We shall see!
