Oh man, are you looking forward to Sunday?! With a completely decimated receiving corps, Dominique Rogers Cromartie getting suspended, and a terri-bad 0-5 record, there’s no way the Denver Broncos could lose to the Giants on Sunday night, right?
Not so fast, Broncos fans. We’ve been shocked by the New York Giants before.
Let’s not forget that the 1986 Denver Broncos met the New York Giants in Pasadena for Super Bowl XXI. As the second quarter was drawing to a close, the Broncos were leading 10-7. However, in the waning minute of the half, an Elway safety began the beginning of the end, as the Giants rattled off 26 unanswered points. A Rich Karlis field goal and a late Vance Johnson touchdown could not overcome this legendary Giants team. The Giants crushed Denver in Super Bowl XXI, 39-20.
The Broncos squad that rolled into the Meadowlands in 1998 had everything going for them. The Giants were 5-8 and appeared to be no match for the 13-0 defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. Three Jason Elam field goals and a Terrell Davis touchdown had Denver sitting in the lead, 16-13, in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter. Then Amani Toomer happend. With :47 on the game-clock, Toomer hauled in a back breaking reception at the back of the end zone that ended all undefeated season hopes in that 1998 season.
...but Amani Toomer wasn’t done there.
In 2005, the Broncos were again riding high. Were it not for an opening day loss to the Miami Dolphins, they would have again been undefeated. Regardless, their five straight wins following that loss had the fans excited for a deep playoff run. For the first quarter, a Giants touchdown narrowly edged the Broncos with their pair of fieldgoals.
In the second quarter, Broncos running back Mike Anderson took the lead with a 2-yard rush. The Giants kept it close with a fieldgoal to close out the half. In the third quarter, the Broncos expanded their lead with a fullback Kyle Johnson touchdown. The fourth quarter is where things went wrong. Jason Elam kicked a fieldgoal and it looked as though the Broncos were going to run away with it, 23-10. Then Tiki Barber scored a touchdown bringing the game to within 6-points.
Then Amani Toomer happened.
As in 1998, Amani Toomer hauled in the game-winning touchdown pass in the back of the end zone to defeat the Denver Broncos, this time with just :05 left on the clock.
This Sunday night, the Broncos will again face the New York Giants. While it appears the game should be ours for the taking, it’s important to remember that the Giants have played spoiler before and should never be underestimated.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE NEW YORK GIANTS
