Back in February when the Denver Broncos decided not to pick up Russell Okung’s contract option, we thought they were either crazy smart or just plain crazy. It’s looking a bit like the latter now.
Without any viable option at left tackle it was clear they had a target in mind heading into free agency and/or the draft. The target ended up being Menelik Watson in free agency and Garett Bolles in the draft.
But what if they had kept Russell Okung and still drafted Garett Bolles?
They would be in pretty good shape, actually. Okung has graded out at a respectable 72.7 from Pro Football Focus at left tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers, which means he could have found success at right tackle in Denver. He certainly would be better than the putrid 38.7 PFF grade that Watson has put out so far this season.
In free agency and the NFL Draft, you can’t win them all and this was one decision that John Elway would like to have back.
