We all like to play general manager. Whether for the Denver Broncos or any team, it’s fun to put that hat on, see what moves we would make, throw it out there and see what sticks.
It’s especially fun with the Broncos since they make moves in free agency. If there’s a player they target, they go after them and sign them ... as long as a fax machine isn’t involved. All jokes aside, John Elway knows how to make his team better. Thus, we get the speculation on what positions and who they will target.
On Friday’s The Afternoon Drive, Eric Goodman and Nick Griffith posed the question: What two free agents would you sign? Goodman then listed off a litany of players who could or will become free agents and players Elway could target. Most where offensive and defensive linemen.
For a starter, it’s important to know where Denver sits in terms of the salary cap. As we speak, according to overthecap.com, the Broncos have $31.9 million in cap space for the 2017 season. One aspect to keep in mind is the rookie class Denver will have to sign. There seems to be confusion on how much cap is needed to sign those rookies, and overthecap did a great job clearing that up. In 2016, Elway and the Broncos had a total rookie pool of $6.4 million, while the effective cap cost was $1.9 million. If we estimate it will be roughly the same this season, Denver would have around $30 million in cap space to sign free agents come March 9.
With that out of the way, here’s the two players I would target first: guard Kevin Zeitler and right tackle Rick Wagner. The offensive line is the most needed of a makeover and those two guys would immediately improve the group. Once those two guys are signed, sealed and delivered, then go after a defensive linemen - either Calais Campbell or Brandon Williams.
As the days get closer to March 9, the excitement continues to build. Who will Elway and the Broncos sign?
