Report: Broncos having a pre-draft visit with Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon

Probably the most controversial prospect in this year's draft, Joe Mixon is meeting with the Denver Broncos on Thursday.

According to 9NEWS Denver's Mike Klis, former Oklahoma Sooners running back Joe Mixon will be in for a pre-draft visit with the Denver Broncos today.

Before we talk football, we must address the reason that Mixon is the most controversial prospect in this year's NFL Draft. Back in 2014, Mixon punched a female student after an altercation between the two. He ended up breaking the woman's jaw and cheekbone because of the punch. The video of the incident can be found here.

The video and his actions are disgusting, but he has been remorseful and incident-free since the altercation.

What makes this more diffiuclt is that Mixon is a very good running back prospect who would likely be the first or second running back off the board if he didn't have this baggage connected with him. Broncos want to meet with him and see if taking the likely PR hit is worth it because of his talent.

This is why he has a total of 12 team visits lined up. He wasn't invited to the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month, so this is the only opportunity for the General Managers, Coaches, Owners and such to meet Mixon face-to-face and talk about everything and see if he is worth the risk.

Now let's talk about what he did on the football field.

In two seasons at Oklahoma, he totaled 2,027 yards rushing, 17 touchdowns, and averaged 6.8 yards per carry. He also totaled 65 receptions for 894 yards and another 9 touchdowns. So his college production was pretty good, and why he would be considered a top 15 pick in the draft if he was clean.

Mixon's agent Peter Schaffer, who spoke to Mike Klis, called his client an "outstanding individual" and believes people will come away feeling the same way after meeting with him.

"I think he’s an outstanding individual,’’ said Peter Schaffer, the Denver-based agent who represents Mixon. "He’s been nothing but fantastic every step along the way with me. Everybody who’s come in contact with him has come away very impressed with his character and his demeanor and his positive attitude, as well as his love of football as well as his acknowledgement he’s made a mistake. I expect the people he meets with will come away with the same feeling.’’

The Broncos appear to be in the market for a running back after meeting with all top running back prospects at the Combine. There are even rumors going around the league that the Broncos would like to take McCaffrey in the first-round of April's NFL Draft.

This visit means the Broncos are doing their due diligence on a talented prospect with some heavy baggage. This also means that the Broncos have not removed Mixon of their draft(at least not yet) and would like to meet with him before deciding to do so.

Whether we like it or not, Mixon will play in the NFL next year and will likely be drafted. He's just too talented and ultimately if you can play, a team will bite the bullet and make it work.

The question is, will it be the Broncos?
