In the fifth round with the 145th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos have selected Michigan tight end Jake Butt.

Jake Butt was the Big Ten's Conference Tight End of the Year the past two seasons and put up tremendous production with 97 catches, 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns. Thought of as an early round pick, Butt unfortunately tore his ACL in their bowl game loss to Florida State.

Butt has the size and ability to become a true #1 tight end in the NFL. He will likely start the 2017 season on the PUP list, but he could be ready to contribute his rookie season. He did receive a $500,000 insurance policy payout for falling all the way to the fifth round.

Pro Football Focus thinks he has severe limitations in the run game, but could open things up in the passing game.

Bottom line: If you’re drafting Butt and expecting him to be the complete package as an NFL tight end, you’re going to be disappointed with the results. Butt has limitations as a run-blocker, both at the line of scrimmage and as he moves up to the second level. He’s not overly athletic but moves well enough and he doesn’t mess around with the ball in his hands, as soon as he catches it he turns up field and looks to squeeze out as much from every play as he can. Butt is a reliable target with a penchant for finding open space underneath the coverage, he may not make chunk yardage plays consistently at the next level, but he should have no issues helping a team move the chains.
