Denver Broncos select wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft

The Denver Broncos have drafted Isaiah McKenzie with the 175th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

After a trade with the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round, the Denver Broncos used their 172nd pick of the 2017 NFL Draft to select Georgia wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie. The Broncos gave up their original seventh round pick (238th overall) to the Packers to move up three spots in the fifth round.

Isaiah McKenzie is an undersized receiver with plus ability on special teams. Had six return scores in his career at Georgia and according to reports, scored a touchdown every seventh time he touched the ball on offense.

At 5’7” and 173 lbs, he is a smaller receiving threat and more explosive as a return man. According to his scouting reports, McKenzie has big play ability when schemed to his specific skill set.

BOTTOM LINE: McKenzie's big play production is impressive on paper, but once you get into the tape, it becomes apparent that much of what he is able to accomplish is due to mismatched speed in space and packaged plays tailored towards his strengths. As a receiver, he is below the mark of what teams will expect from their slots in terms of route-running, but his explosive return ability could land him work right away.
