Isaiah McKenzie races ahead as Broncos OTAs standout

Denver’s fifth-round pick has left an impression on his coaches and teammates. The Afternoon Drive caught with McKenzie on Friday’s show.

Over the course of Organized Team Activities, a few players have consistently been mentioned as “standouts” for the Denver Broncos.

One of those is fifth-round draft pick Isaiah McKenzie. Last weekend I touched on the impressions both he and third-round pick Carlos Henderson were making on their coaches and teammates. After another week of consistent play, the focus is still on McKenzie.

They’ve talked about what was mentioned in that story above in how he could turn out to be more than just a return specialist for the Broncos, which was the initial thought when he was drafted. That consistent play also led Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro to interview McKenzie on Friday’s The Afternoon Drive.

Eric and Les caught up with McKenzie to talk about working out in Denver’s altitude and his insane speed/quickness he brings. In the process, McKenzie said something Eric has never heard in his career: McKenzie loves special teams. That shows he has the right approach and attitude.

It’s still early and there’s a lot of time before the games start, but the prospects of McKenzie in Denver’s special teams and offense are exciting to contemplate.
