The Denver Broncos held court on Wednesday, with several members of the team meeting with media the day before training camp is set to begin. One of those people was star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.
Thomas has been a little more focused and a little more hungry for success having started his training earlier than in previous offseasons.
“For the most part, I’m excited about training camp to see who is going to be our starting quarterback,” Thomas said on Wednesday. “I still think that that’s coaches’ decision to make and pick the guy to see who it’s going to be. It’s going to take some time, but I think the main thing is that it’s going to help the situation out is that everyone who is going to be around the guys just gets better and let’s that play out. I’m excited about it and I look forward to it.”
Thomas dropped 12 pounds this season in order “to gain more explosiveness” in 2017. Given that, he also has high expectations for the eventual Broncos starter at quarterback.
“What anybody else wants to see, throw some completions and progression,” Thomas said when asked what he hopes to see from both quarterbacks. “Make it hard for coach to pick the starter. You go into week one and either one of them could be the starter, you just have to make the decision. Make it hard for each other and come out and compete.”
He wasn’t asked specifically about Trevor Siemian, but he did have a question about Paxton Lynch that seems to show the young quarterback has taken strides towards competing for the starting job in Denver.
“I saw big ones,” Thomas said of the strides Lynch has taken. “Totally different guy than last year. He was more comfortable. Reading all of his reads, making the throws. That’s why I said I’m excited about it because Trevor got it, Paxton got it, so we’re going to see who comes out on top.”
May the best man win. Starting today!
