In case you missed it, the prevailing (annoying?) narrative of the 2017 Broncos preseason is the quarterback battle between Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian. Who has had a better day? Who has the most upside? Does Vance Joseph prefer Trevor or Paxton? Who was on the practice field first? What kind of Gatorade was Lynch drinking?
It’s nauseating.
The truth is that, as of the fourth day of training camp, there is no clear-cut winner in the quarterback competition.
After Sunday’s less than stellar offensive practice, it’s safe to say that the decision will be a messy one and likely one made on the slimmest of margins. Regardless who who wins out, fans are going to be angry.
Why?
I believe that a notable portion of fans have become too invested personally in who they believe is the better quarterback. I know I’m in the minority for this blog (and perhaps Broncos Country itself) when I say that I honestly don’t care who wins the job. Sure, I have my own feelings on who I’d like to see win-out, but I refuse to let them ruin my day with whatever fluctuations may be occuring within the moment-to-moment. I just want the most qualified person under center when the Broncos face off against the Chargers on September 11th.
Yeah, but Paxton was skittish to start practice. Yeah, but Lynch keeps throwing short of the sticks on third-and-long. Yeah, but Lynch looks like a pirate and Siemian wore his Skittles-dispensing jacket for three straight months without washing it (I kid). The truth is that there’s a possibility that neither of these guys are going to be the long-term solution. How silly will we all look in a few years when we look back on this ‘Team-Paxton’ vs. ‘Team-Siemian’ rancor and the quarterback landscape has dramatically shifted. Perhaps it’s time to just chill out and remember that we are all Team-Broncos.
