Name: Steven Scheu
Position: TE
Height: 6’5" Weight: 256 lbs
Age: 24 Experience: 2nd
College: Vanderbilt
A month after being released by the New England Patriots a week before the start of the 2016 season, Scheu was added to the Denver Broncos practice squad. As an undrafted free agent, that is about as good of an opportunity as one could hope for.
The Good
Coming out of college, Scheu displayed tremendous adjustments to inaccurate throws and was able to make many catches while being heavily contested by defenders. He showed some moves in OTA’s as well, helping Paxton Lynch and the #2 offense out of a 1st and 15 jam with a 19 yard reception.
The Bad
He lacks overall athleticism. Scheu will never outrun defenders down the seam and isn’t quite strong enough to be an effective run blocker. It seems like he will be a fringe guy on this roster, but having spent an entire year on the practice squad should give him an inside advantage to stick around and continue to develop his game.
Quotable
Scheu isn’t your typical jock either. With a degree in medicine, health and society, he plans to continue to pursue his professional healthcare career after football.
“Most of the people in that major are guys that are going to go on and pursue some sort of professional healthcare career like medical school, optometry, being a dentist,” Scheu said. “So, after football, or possibly in the offseason, I’d like to pursue my MBA in health care management and then after I do that kind of go from there.”
Status
With a stacked tight end field including A.J. Derby, Jeff Heuerman, Virgil Green, Jake Butt, Henry Krieger-Coble and others, making the final 53-man roster is a very unlikely possibility for Scheu.
However, if he can keep grinding and fight his way back onto the practice squad, he can at least keep working and who knows where he’ll be come next offseason.
