Broncos quarterbacks struggle during the first day of joint practices

New, comments

Not great news for the Broncos quarterbacks.

NFL: Preseason-San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

One thing I was looking forward to during the two-day joint practices between the Broncos and 49ers was a different set of eyes watching the Broncos quarterback battle. The 49ers beat writers along with the Broncos beat writers watched practice today and well, their opinions on Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian weren’t great.

Joe Fann, a senior reporter for the San Fransisco 49ers tweeted out that he “wasn’t overly impressed” with either Broncos quarterback today. He even went on to say that veteran journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer was the best quarterback out there today.

The hits kept coming too, this time from Grant Cohn from the Santa Rosa Press. Cohn said that Paxton Lynch is just awful and that 49ers 2017 third round pick, quarterback C.J. Beathard has a “much brighter future” than the Broncos former first-round pick.

Now this all could be “bias” from the 49ers beat writers but it does backup the general consensus from Training Camp. That consensus is that neither quarterback is all that good but Paxton Lynch has been the worse of the two.

If true, this is not a great development for the Broncos who have a roster built to win now. If both continue to struggle tomorrow and on Saturday night, could this force General Manager/President of Football Operations John Elway to explore and potentially pull the trigger on a trade for a quarterback? That’s purely speculative from me, but if this continues it may force Elway’s hand.

Now for the local interpretation of Broncos practice, well it went as usual. One started out well and struggled later and the other started slow and finished better.

This time with Paxton Lynch starting out hot and finishing cold while Trevor started out cold and finished out hot.

Want a winner of the day? Mike Pritchard of 104.3 The Fan gave the W to Paxton Lynch. He said that he saw Lynch “make strides” throughout the practice while Siemian remained the same. Cecil Lammey also gave the W to Paxton Lynch because Trevor Siemian had multiple turnovers today.

That’s just two takes from today’s practice and as usual, there are probably many more opinions on who “won the day” for the Broncos.

The big concern here is how neither is looking all that good. Hopefully, that changes as the week goes on, but when Brian Hoyer is the best quarterback on the field then we may have some issues.
