For Your Consideration: Shaquil Barrett

Shaquil Barrett has quietly been a better player than Shane Ray and not just in Ray's rookie season, Barrett outranked Ray in ProFootballFocus metrics of pass coverage and run-defense. The only category where Ray has outranked Barrett in in pass-rushing and even there it isn't by much.

Yesterday, Barrett walked back starting left tackle, rookie Garett Bolles during a one-on-one drill. This in his first plays back after tearing a labrum in his hip and having it surgically repaired. Barrett is so good that the only reason that Joe Thomas isn't currently the Broncos starting left tackle is that the Cleveland Browns wanted a 3rd round draft pick and Shaquil Barrett in a trade two seasons ago.

In efforts that have continued since Barrett was first injured earlier this offseason Denver has tried a combination of Vontarrius Dora and Kasim Edebali, neither of whom have been able to do much if anything in preseason. The Broncos defense as a whole has one sack combined through eight quarters of preseason.
