The Denver Broncos held a walk through today, but that did not stop news from happening. Tackle Donald Stephenson has agreed to restructure his contract likely securing a roster spot for himself on the 2017 Broncos. He has played mostly right tackle on the second-team throughout training camp and the preseason. Head coach Vance Joseph also seemingly named Chris Lewis-Harris the fourth cornerback (putting him ahead of rookie Brendan Langley and Lorenzo Doss), he also gave fullback Andy Janovich a big compliment. What to say when Deadspin tells you 'Why Your Team Sucks'.
Since when has sucking stopped the Broncos from beating the New England Patriots? Last season, Tom Brady for how untouchable he played coming off of suspension had a stat line of 16-for-32 for 188 yards on no touchdowns. 75 of those yards came via six passes to Julian Edelman. Five of those passes were caught while Denver backup inside linebacker Corey Nelson was inexplicably covering Edelman. The Patriots only touchdown that game came after a Trevor Siemian red zone interception at the top of the 2nd quarter that Logan Ryan ran back 46-yards before Demaryius Thomas grabbed him.
What to say when consistently ruining a red zone opportunity is still consistency.
The Broncos were 28th (of 32) last season in red zone efficiency. Now look at the arsenal Denver has in the red zone: Demaryius Thomas 3.0 (they've rebuilt him), a revamped offensive line with a left tackle (Garett Bolles) dialed in to 10 on insanity mode, Jamaal Charles, Emmanuel Sanders, C.J. Anderson, De'Angelo Henderson, Isaiah McKenzie, Devontae Booker (finished 2nd in catches for the Broncos last season), Jeff Heuerman, A.J. Derby and Jeff Heuerman.
What to say when someone says Denver's wasting their defense on the quarterback.
Trevor Siemian could have mailed it in for the next two seasons and hit free agency in 2019 to more cheers than Wade Phillips at a Bay Area In-n-Out during Super Bowl week. Seriously, he would have made so much money with an 8-6 win-loss record. As he continued to show well in preseason and sit the bench during the season his legend would have grown and grown. Paxton Lynch would have been steady and gotten them into the playoffs as well. Lynch has accounted for just as many points as Siemian in preseason and less than 20 total yards on four more plays than Siemian. Siemian would have coasted through gigantic free agency contracts to Drew Brees, Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford had he remained a backup .
What to say when your friend just won the opportunity to kill their chance at over $100-million.
In 2019, Siemian will hit free agency among quarterbacks like Carson Palmer (who may be retired at 39 years old by then) and Matt Ryan (who will be re-signed by the Atlanta Falcons way before he becomes anywhere near available) leaving Trevor Siemian as the crown free agency jewel among a quarterback pool that only includes Alex Smith and Tyrod Taylor at the moment.
If you want to know around what Siemian would make if he didn't play a single game over the next two seasons, let's look to Minnesota Vikings' quarterback Sam Bradford. Right now market value on Bradford for 2018 (meaning in 2019, when Siemian hits free agency, this will go up), who has a career record of 32-45-1, is 4 years, $94,040,853 with an average salary of $23,510,213.
Siemian's record of 8-6 in very similar, but far superior in actual difficulty to Chicago Bears starting quarterback Mike Glennon's 5-13 record. Glennon was signed by the Bears this offseason, he made $18,500,00 guaranteed at signing with a three-year contract for $45,000,000. By the time Siemian reaches free agency he will have made a grand total of $2,332,783 over the total of his four season contract.
What to say whenever you read anything about trading either Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch.
Why would the Broncos trade either of them? They have two quarterbacks whose floor is mediocrity, Denver fans have personally seen a mediocre quarterback win a Super Bowl three times. Everything that I said about Siemian earlier applies to Lynch, except the Broncos have a fifth-year option available for Lynch. If exercised, that fifth-year option will pay Lynch below market value in his 5th season and then the team can tag him in 2020 if that's what they feel is necessary and still will only be paying him minimum money.
What to say when you're arguing about 2020.
You know who else is a free agent for the Broncos in 2020?
Everyone, literally: Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Aqib Talib, Derek Wolfe, Chris Harris Jr., C.J. Anderson, Shane Ray, Adam Gotsis, Devontae Booker, Justin Simmons, Devontae Booker, Connor McGovern,Will Parks, and Riley Dixon.
The Broncos have zero plans other than Von Miller that extend past 2019.
